As a kid, I knew many people who hated milkweed because "it's too messy" I don't know if they knew that milkweed is a critical food source for certain insects Or that the scent is incredible Or that, if you look closely, beauty can be found in these so-called messes #stunday #nativeplants

First America - It Happened Here | Episode 3
Listen to First America - It Happened Here | Episode 3 by Pushkin Industries on Podcast Addict. The American Revolution wasn’t just a fight for liberty. It was also a sprawling conflict with Indigenous nations over who would control the continent of North America. And to stake out their claim, the United States was willing to commit genocide. Rebecca talks to Maggie Blackhawk (Ojibwe) about how our country’s early treatment of Native Americans is the root of authoritarianism in the United States.Resources: - Jeffrey Ostler, "“To Extirpate the Indians”: An Indigenous Consciousness of Genocide in the Ohio Valley and Lower Great Lakes, 1750s–1810," The William and Mary Quarterly, by Thurman Wilkins - Rhiannon Koehler "Hostile Nations: Quantifying the Destruction of the Sullivan-Clinton Genocide of 1779," American Indian Quarterly, 2018See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A photograph by Jennie Ross Cobb (1881-1959), often called the first Native American woman photographer, certainly Cobb, a member of the Cherokee Nation, was among the first, but there may be other Native American women photographers of her generation whose work has been lost to time, or who have yet to be discovered, suffice it to say she was among the first. Photographed in 1902, along the Cherokee Central railroad in Oklahoma. Note the woman on our left who appears to be wearing a ribbon skirt, in addition to the contemporary women's fashion of the time. | Oklahoma Historical Society Archives

“The resolution was brought forward by the NAIWA Daughters, a group of Indigenous girls aged 10 to 17, making it the first all-female-led rights-of-nature effort in the U.S., and only the second such youth-led resolution passed by a Tribal nation.”

“On Jan. 8, 2026, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribal Council unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the inherent legal rights of the Longperson (Ganvhidv Asgaya), an interconnected waterway system whose headwaters rise in the Great Smoky Mountains and end in the sea.”
