True, also surprised me too. But arrivals ≠ spend and France’s economy is so huge and diversified (Airbus, luxury goods, ag, nuclear) that tourism gets diluted as a %. Countries hit 20%+ tourism GDP by having not much else really.

Nine months ago, I wrote a Substack post about Google Maps and London's restaurants algorithm and offered an alternative map. The Guardian made a video about it. Google wouldn't comment. Today they've finally written to me about section 3.2.3, "No Scraping." Communication at last lol.

The Great British Clubhouse Is Still Standing. Nobody's In It, Least of All Where It's Needed Most
I tried to measure the decline of British community life by counting clubs. That was the wrong place to look. What’s disappearing is participation especially where deprivation is high.
061
Lauren Leek @laurenleek.eu · 29/06/2026
And it's unequal. Convivial clubs cluster in comfortable areas; food banks and mental-health charities in deprived ones. Resulting in that in richer Britain, community means joining and n poorer Britain, it means need.

Lauren Leek @laurenleek.eu · 29/06/2026
The charity register shows no collapse in clubs. The founding rate's been flat for 20 or so years. But formal volunteering has fallen from 45% of adults to 28% in a decade. So, the main problem is participating and showing up.

Lauren Leek @laurenleek.eu · 29/06/2026
I downloaded every charity in England & Wales expecting to find Britain's clubs dying. Instead I found that the problem is turning up and fastest in the poorest places, where it'd help most. New piece on the geography of belonging 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/laurenle...

Good point and that would be a great thing to test! State fixed effects would handle the general NSW–Victoria difference, but the cleaner way to test the “pokie tourism” story is a border discontinuity: does pokie intensity jump on the NSW side near the border for otherwise similar pokies venues?
