This is Erik Giggleman, a 7th generation Texan and an elite U.S. Army veteran who volunteered soon after the Russian invasion. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, thousands of Americans have volunteered to fight, and around 100 have died. He was one of them.

1. In 2018, I reported and hosted a podcast called Dr. Death, about a neurosurgeon who was allowed to keep practicing even when it was clear he was a danger to patients. There have been tens of millions of downloads, and it has brought to light systemic failures of our health care system.

Bill Moyers meant everthing to me. We both grew up in Marshall TX, a generation apart, but bound by the same sense of place. He encouraged me to become a journalist, and gave this small town girl confidence -- in the beginning and all along the way. RIP Bill.

Update: 15 confirmed cases. Health officials are racing to offer vaccines to unvaccinated children, they're operating a mobile unit to screen for cases, pre-treating exposed infants. Schools & hospitals are on alert. Measles outbreaks are v hard to contain. A totally preventable situation.

For most of this year, I’ve been investigating the sudden death of a young woman named Kimberly Ray. In the spring of 2021, she went into an ambulatory surgery center for what was supposed to be a quick, extremely safe procedure. Her husband and young daughter waited for her in the car. 🧵 1/6
