A lion, a star, and a name that no longer needs writing. This striking Roman intaglio ring, found at the Union Grounds in Colchester, dates to the 3rd century AD. The deep blue gem is nicolo paste, a dark glass used to imitate more expensive stones, and it’s been engraved with a lion beneath a star.
Close-up of a Roman ring with a deep blue glass intaglio set in a bronze bezel. The engraved image shows a lion walking beneath a small star. The ring is worn but still clearly detailed, with a rich patina on the metal and a glossy surface to the gem.

#FindsFriday Dartmoor is rich in Bronze Age ceramics as so few people have lived there since. These (2250-1100 BC) are in Plymouth's terrific Box museum: Raddick Hill 'Trevisker' (from Cornwall) vessel Chagford beaker Dewerstone 'Trevisker' vessel Hurston Ridge Collared Urn
Four vessels are shown.
On the left, a pinkish one with near vertical sides has an upper section with incised decoration.
The next two are smaller pinkish vessels, a beaker with a bulbous body and splayed neck with scratched decoration, and one about half its size which has a ring of punched circles and tiny handles near the neck.
On the right is a slightly darker, very large urn with a small base that extends to a body that's broader near the top, before turning in with a broad banded neck, decorated with incised lines in geometric patterns.

In Neolithic Denmark, for example, 'sun stones' were likely buried in the ground like seeds as a kind of fertility ritual. Following a volcanic eruption that blocked out the sun, they may have done it as a plea to return the darkened sun. 2/2 Learn more 🆓 doi.org/10.15184/aqy...
