I don't think this event was sponsored on BlueSky this year, but I had fun doing these two covers for The Imagined Book Cover challenge on Instagram. They gave me an opportunity to experiment a little and smile to myself during an otherwise busy week! #imaginedbookcover #imaginedbookcover2025

An entry for The Imagined Book Cover challenge, day three, The Cat and Lord Snodbury. My cover shows an early 18th C. lord with an orange cat barely visible from on top of the lord's hat, a paw reaching down to swipe a cab-yellow ostrich feather. The lord is wearing a red coat with gold trim and a lace collar, and the background is green with a faint damask pattern. I have made up a feline name for the author: Kitty Penfeather. Cover by Laura Alderson

An entry for The Imagined Book Cover challenge, day six, Dodo's Don't Eat Donuts. The cover shows a huge speech bubble on a red background with the title scrawled across it, while in the foreground a blue and orange dodo is, naturally, about to chomp down on a donut. The dodo is looking back in the direction of the speech in startled surprise. Cover by Laura Alderson

The first of two pages from a graphic novel excerpt for #kidlitartpostcard: Two anthropomorphic dogs are tugging at a sausage that one of them stole. The binding snaps and they go tumbling down the hill…(continued)

They land at the bottom and are met with unpleasant surprise: the butcher who made the sausages is waiting for them! They run for their lives…(comic by Laura Alderson)

👋🏼 Hello art directors and editors. Happy #KidLitArtPostcard day! Did you know I like to draw chickens? And quilts too? 😁 Check out my portfolio at kirstenmcgonigal.com to see what else I like drawing, and writing about too! I’m rep’d by @beccalangton.bsky.social of @da-childrens.bsky.social #kidlit

Whimsical children’s book illustration showing a parade of chickens marching down a city street. The chicken in front carries a long flag made of red white and blue while squares, arranged in various configurations of Stars and Stripes. She is pulling a wagon with three chicks in it. Behind the chicks marches a hen wearing boots and carrying a drum, which she is beating as she marches. Behind her comes a duck, looking grouchy and pulling a cannon, on top of which stands a rooster, who looks very pompous as he blows into a golden horn.
