The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

Why must writing budget justifications for grant proposals be such a soul crushingly tedious task? Why can’t we just say “I need the money to pay people and buy the supplies to do the experiments, plus a little to disseminate the results.” Promise, no luxury trips to Hawaii!

And every day I worry that any one of the grants I do have could be stopped at any moment for no good reason, the philanthropy won’t come through, the costs of doing research will continue to rise while the awards are trimmed, etc., etc.

Today I dealt with aspects of 8 different grants that are either funded, waiting for no competing yr NOA, in development, or being submitted now, plus two philanthropic leads. It is not possible for me to manage 8 grants, but this is how we live as scientists amidst the federal funding chaos☹️
