Everyone has relied on 1) people develop expert scientific judgement through learning-by-doing, and 2) experience is consequently a good proxy for that. Unfortunately learning-by-asking-ChatGPT does not work. AI can thus cause a future shortage scientific talent. medium.com/zs-associate...

The economics of expertise: what AI means for the future of scientific talent
AI is reshaping scientific expertise in R&D. Leaders must preserve the experiences that build judgment as routine work becomes automated

I don't want to in any way downplay the problems. I have to point out the glaring statistical problem, though: if you ask a question starting with "Have you ever", the percentage that can honestly answer "no" will always be lower for people who have been around longer.

It really is striking how many authoritarian states have ended up in this exact same place, where the leader seizes control of scientific inquiry. Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, Aryan Physics in the Third Reich, Great Leap Forward (also related to Lysenko) in China.

I've personally set 10% funding rate as my absolute minimum for being willing to review for a funding agency. If you fund less that you are just wasting everyone's time, because you're not even funding the excellent proposals.

Trump seems obsessed with renaming bodies of water. I think Copenhagen Municapality should rename Sortedams Sø to Lake Trump. I know this is a controversial suggestion, but please hear me out. There is sound logic behind the madness.

Let me see if I got this right: Trump wants to remove the excellent electromagnetic catapults from aircraft carriers with old steam-driven ones? But he wants electromagnetic rail guns, which are still very flawed, on his new battleships?

The speed with which Wikipedia is updated is just astonishing. This morning it took under 30 min from the official time of death of King Harald V of Norway until the page of his granddaughter had been renamed to have "Crown Princess" in the title! Now compare that to retraining an LLM.

Last Friday, I discussed with a student who was worried about what would happen in terms of the need for AI experts if the AI bubble bursts. My take was that OpenAI and Anthropic will be wiped out and everyone else will switch to open-weights models, giving a six months setback in performance.

To some extent, the new order would align the United States more with some of its chief cyberantagonists, including China and Russia, where spy agencies have long relied on contract hackers working in the private sector to further their national security missions, in part to afford the state plausible deniability.

The regime’s attack on American science ended up supercharging Chinese science investment and it is already paying off...
In 2020, the Party’s Central Committee established “scientific and technological self-reliance” as a paramount goal, and last year funding for exploratory basic research hit a record seven per cent of the nation’s R. & D. budget.

The effects were startling. By 2024, China had outstripped the U.S. in the number of clinical trials. (Recruiting test subjects there can take less than half the time, and trials cost an estimated forty per cent less.) That fall, an experimental cancer drug from the Chinese firm Akeso outperformed Keytruda, a gold-standard therapy made by the American pharma giant Merck.

Early this year, after the Trump Administration slashed funding to American federal and academic scientific studies, the Chinese government announced another ten-per-cent increase in funding for science and technology. China has overtaken both the U.S. and the European Union in publishing influential research papers, measured by how often they are cited by others. Chinese biotech firms now generate nearly a third of the world’s new drug candidates, almost matching the U.S. “People in Washington are worried that biotech is the next E.V.s,” an American executive told me.

I respect the candor here. But I don't agree with the geopolitics, at all. The line between democracies and autocracies is not as crisp as this pretends. How much do we trust, e.g., an AI company in a competitive-authoritarian state that launches sneak decapitation attacks & bombs schools?
