The lack of democracy at Conservative conference should probably attract more comment. Members did force a higher housing target in 1950, an event still seen as unique 30 years later. Lay motions were effectively abolished in 1998/99. It must contribute to the 'empty seats' syndrome in Birmingham
Extract from The Making of Conservative Party Policy (1980), which says 'writers... usually cite the housing debate of 1950, when the conference wrung a pledge from an unwilling platform ... the fact that no other case can be found weakens the argument.'

'City of cars' is affecting, angering - and a call to action. I'd recommend it to anyone - especially those with an interest in Birmingham and/or road safety.

It was great to catch up recently with Chris Martin, Principal, and Sharon Williamson, Business Manager, at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School. The school has exciting plans for the future. STACS students are always impressive - either at the school, or when groups visit Parliament.

Someone who worked for Virgin in the early years told me that they'd reckoned out that each extra seat in the Pendelinos was worth £1m in profit over its lifetime (in late 1990s prices). So alignment went out the window, so to speak.

It's also symbolic timing. Thirty years, almost exactly to the day, since West Coast InterCity services were privatised.

Avanti West Coast Main Line InterCity services will be returned to public ownership on 07 March. Accompanied by investment in passenger services and in facilities at Euston. Railways run by and for the nation. I'm proud to have worked on the legislation that made this possible.

Are Reform UK *sure* they want to yoke themselves to people like Daniel “Danny Tommo” Thomas? Nigel Farage was adamant for years that most voters instantly recognise and intensely dislike football thug types like him and Tommy Robinson.

Thanks for being understanding. When I started, I did worry about whether representations might unfairly bump someone 'up the queue.' And in time learned that, often, there is no queue. Ten years without street signs is just one case but it's symptomatic of bigger problems.

For my part, I don't feel I can look away or pass the buck when a problem has gone unresolved for ten years. And fixing road signs is much easier to post about than the very private problems (relating to an individual's housing, for example) that I often take up with the Council.

Council matters make up the majority of my postbag / inbox - it's similar for other MPs. Parliament has never issued a job description for MPs. And perhaps it should. But people generally get the MPs' use of time that they want.

Hi James - if I may, this is the way the role has evolved. Legislative scrutiny is still a big part of the job (especially when Parliament is sitting, which it isn't right now). Nut holding public bodies to account (including the Council) is part of it too.

The bereaved families of military personnel should always be at the heart of our acts of remembrance as a nation. The extension of free rail travel to next of kin on national rail services to events between 7 and 8 November is the right thing to do. I am proud this Government is acting.

Burnham scraps restrictions on disabled people’s bus passes in England
Move means holders will be able to travel free on local services at any time of day or night from April next year Disabled people across England will be able to use their free bus passes at any time of day from next April, as Andy Burnham expands a policy he introduced as mayor of Greater Manchester. The prime minister has said the current weekday restrictions on when disabled people can use their bus passes will be removed from 1 April 2027. Their passes are valid only between 9.30am and 11pm on weekdays, although some councils pay to allow people free travel outside those hours. Continue reading...

There are plenty. And that's the point. There is a diversity of views, including in Weoley. But the phrase 'flag shaggers of Weoley Castle' can be reasonably read as a description of the community. And there have been enough broad generalisations about Weoley in the city already.
