I'll point out that the acceptable level of mold, insect parts and rodent hairs in foods is around 3% to 10% before the FDA considers a batch contaminated enough to take action. We would be lucky to have only .0002% mold in our apricot puree (11% is acceptable). web.archive.org/web/20130319...

From 1988. First song on the LP that would eventually spawn the hit "Punk Rock Girl". At first I thought this lyric was homophobic: "I'd rather live on planet Mars/ And die from lack of oxygen /Than breathe the air of other men" until I was at an apt. shared by 4+ male undergrads. Oh, the smells.

PDX MAX story: 20ish white dude watching vids with loud speaker. I say, "hey, could you use headphones?" He looks at me like I'm from Mars. Says nothing. I repeat, "please use headphones, no one wants to hear your tiktoks" His reply is "why are you choosing violence?"

I took this pic in the Netherlands in late 2024, but the typo still makes me laugh. At the time, I didn't think about whether the images were AI-generated, but looking at the odd strawberry leaves and the 2 random strawberries on the table, I'm leaning yes.

I have deferred jury duty sometime in the next 10 months and cannot wait for voir dire questions like "if we read fan fiction aloud that speaks to motive, can you keep a straight face? Okay, great. How about AI generated slow jams? No? Okay, dismissed."

my second favorite city councilor is under fire by the cops because his tweets 6 years ago were too good. so i made a meme about it. once again this man’s haters are doing his campaign for him. @drmitchpdx.bsky.social
most people rejected his message… (screencap of a mitch green tweet in the place of jesus) “you have a moral obligation to beat the piss out of anyone wearing nazi masks anytime you see it happen.” the crowd of haters all go “shut up!” they hated jesus because he told them the truth.

I have a Masters degree in Info Sci from the 1990s. I know who Claude Shannon is and I've read some of his work (ditto his mentor Vannevar Bush). I'm as mad that his name is attached to AI slop as a paleontologist would be if there was a machine that ruined fossils to make bonemeal called Anning.

The writer of this New Yorker piece is a novelist and Pulitzer Finalist for Criticism who really ought to use the correct word "records" like a chopped unc and not the trendy thing the TikTokkers are calling them.

I would love to see polling on how many Americans support merging our country with Canada, BUT then making the Canadian federal government be the one in charge. 60 Provinces + 8 territories. Liberals get national health care. Conservatives get currency with the UK monarch on the $20 bill. Win/win.

Oddest 9/11 mention: when a newspaper in Fiji circa 2014 used the phrase "the tragic events on November 9th" because the journalist was apparently unaware 1) that Americans don't use the European/Commonwealth date system 2) that September 11th was a date they really ought to have memorized by then.

Not sure if its because I'm old, because of the Simpsons episode where they go to Branson, Mo, or because I've been seeing these LPs in thrift stores for decades, but this was the Andy Williams I thought of, and I was pretty sure he died long ago. (Yep, 2012). Had NEVER heard of the other one.

Next time you have a colonoscopy or simple outpatient procedure* requiring sedation, ask for one of these silver space age heated blankets while you wait to be wheeled into the OR. I felt like I was in Warhol's Factory, and that was BEFORE they gave me any drugs. *I'm fine, don't worry.

If there are any US non-voters out there who think Orange Julius Caesar's idiotic trade war with Canada doesn't impact them: season 2 of the Gay Hockey Show is April 2027. If we don't flip Congress Blue in the midterms to reign in this madness, there's a real possibility HBO doesn't get S2.

To an American, the real crime is that a regular guy has this much vacation and we don't. "Mr. Zgraggen arrived in Bali on Feb. 10 for vacation. Before the Day of Silence in March, hotel staff had explained the relevant restrictions." With that much notice, he could day trip to Muslim Indonesia.

The practice is familiar to anyone from Glasgow, where the Duke of Wellington statue has been wearing a jaunty orange hat since the 1980s.

Palette cleanser: this weekend we went to a show of hand painted movie posters from Ghana. Originally done for pop-up VHS screenings in rural areas with a vcr, projector and limited info about the plot of the film, the aesthetic carried on into the internet age.🧵
Is there a pro-wrestling subplot in Magic Mike I forgot about? Did Channing Tatum have a WWE career before being a movie star? Also no. But this is a much more enticing poster than "a film by Steven Soderbergh", right?
