Learning over an extended childhood has been fundamental to survival during human evolutionary history. Researchers show how Sumatran orangutans use their 8 years of dependency to master a broad diet, necessary for independent survival. They find that infants have individual tendencies to engage in social and individual learning, which together determine diet profile breadth acquired by independence. The finding offers insights into the evolutionary roots of the complex learning mechanisms that characterize humans.

Forget the solar eclipse, there's a far more important thing happening today: Happy #WorldElephantDay everyone! There are 3 species of elephant: Asian, African Savanna and African Forest. All are endangered, Forest critically, due to lost habitat, human-wildlife interactions and the ivory trade 🐘
A bull elephant walking up a hill towards the camera, from a dried out river valley. In the background, 3 more elephants and a herd of zebra are in the valley, with trees beyond it.
