Man schreibt was ab in seinem Leben. Da sieht man, dass ich auch schreiben kann! Aber gewöhnlich schreibe ich nur ab. Tag ein, Tag aus. "Bonaparte schreibt eben so schlecht und unleserlich, als sein Ausdruck im Sprechen rein, gedrängt, nachdrucksvoll ist.

La Revolución francesa despejó de golpe el escalafón: se fusiló o se exilió a media oficialidad noble y quedó sitio para quien supiera hacer el trabajo.Por qué se le recuerda. Como militar, por una carrera de veinte años que se estudia todavía en las academias: Austerlitz en 1805 es el manual de cómo ganar contra un enemigo superior. 6/25 The British used La Lutine as a bomb vessel, a ship carrying heavy mortars, to fire on the Republican batteries ashore. Those guns were directed by a young artillery officer called Napoleon Bonaparte. He won. In December the British left Toulon, and took her with them.

230 years ago today 9 October 1796 the ship the London wrecked off Rapparee Cove. The ship was bringing prisoners of war from St Lucia. Those who survived joined over 2000 other Caribbean prisoners of war at Portchester Castle. Today we commemorated all of them with a new plaque. 🗃️

Over 2000 men, women and children from across the Caribbean and Africa were imprisoned here.

Echt grote kunst eindigt in een museum of galerie. Maar dus niet alle kunst. Veel verdwijnt in depots, of stapelt zich op in de ateliers. Bij geklieder op straat, aan gevels of op treinstellen zie ik die ontwikkeling niet. Daarentegen wordt het werk van architekten, toch ook kunst, vaak verminkt.

One of the men who helped stop Napoleon at Acre had once sat beside him at school. Antoine de Phélippeaux was a fellow pupil at Brienne, where both boys received the military education that would shape their later careers. The Revolution sent them down very different paths.
