Cropley Ashley-Cooper (Later 6th Earl of Shaftesbury) with His Sister Mary Anne Ashley-Cooper, Later Lady Sturt of Crichel clevelandart.org/art/2011.193
Gardner was last in the line of 18th-century British artists—beginning with Francis Cotes and reaching its zenith with Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and George Romney-whose lucrative careers were based on fashionable portraiture. Initially trained by Romney, Gardner established a successful portrait practice that was based on small-scale works in pastel, often in oval formats with landscape backgrounds, as in this drawing. Gardner was particularly adept at capturing the charm of youth, taking advantage of the special optical properties of pastel, whose minute, irregular particles reflect light diffusely, allowing an unparalleled velvety brilliance.

Cloud Study clevelandart.org/art/1980.110
Many English watercolorists of the period were especially interested in capturing natural effects of the landscape, such as cloud formations. Such studies were of particular interest to the French Impressionists.

John Ruskin (also in this gallery) admired Prout’s strength as a draftsman. Like the topographical watercolorists of the 18th century, Prout emphasized form over color in his watercolors, as is evident in the monochromatic, delicate English views in this sketchbook.

Althaea Putting the Fatal Log on the Fire clevelandart.org/art/2008.360
This drawing depicts a scene from the life of Meleager, a figure from Greek mythology who was prophesied to die when a log in the fireplace at the time of his birth completely burned. At that time, Meleager’s mother, Althaea, put out the log and stowed it away for safekeeping. Years later, in the scene depicted here, Althaea exacts revenge on Meleager for killing her brothers in a dispute. Two Furies, goddesses of vengeance, compel the anguished mother to punish her murderous son by burning the fatal log. Picart made this drawing while overseeing the reproduction of Le Brun’s suite of tapestries narrating tales of Meleager into prints. Picart himself made drawings from the tapestries, of which this sheet is an example. The drawings were then used as guides by printmakers Picart hired to re-create the images as engravings.

The Coral Necklace clevelandart.org/art/1997.7
Closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Sandys was a friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and played an active role in the bohemian artistic, literary, and theatrical circles of the day in London. This is a portrait of Mary Emma Jones, the artist’s favorite model, mistress, and mother of his nine children. An extraordinarily skilled draftsman, here he worked in tone rather than line, delicately drawing in chalk on a rough textured sheet and leaving the low points of the paper untouched to produce a stippled, hazy effect. While Jones’s face is exquisitely detailed, the composition becomes increasingly indistinct at the edges, suggesting an apparition.

In this study for the color drypoint and aquatint of the same title, Cassatt worked out the placement of the figure at a writing table. Details such as the precise incline of her head, the curls on her forehead, and the position of her fingers on the envelope are echoed in the print.

Casilear began his career as an engraver but shifted to landscape painting at the suggestion of his friend, the painter Asher B. Durand (1796–1866). He made this drawing while traveling in Europe with Durand and another New York landscape painter, John Frederick Kensett (1816–1872).

Head of a Screaming Man clevelandart.org/art/1967.130.a
After studying in Italy, Benjamin West achieved outstanding success in England, where he served as the second president of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and became a personal friend of King George III. West's earliest paintings were classical and restrained in spirit, but in the 1780s, influenced by the writer Edmund Burke, he became interested in producing grand, terrifying compositions of destruction and apocalypse.

Sketchbook, page 03: " S.R. Gifford 15 10th Street New York" clevelandart.org/art/1971.116.c
Gifford was an American landscape painter belonging to the second generation of Hudson River school artists. Based in New York City with a studio at the Tenth Street Studio Building, Gifford took annual summer trips to the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and other scenic locations in New England. This sketchbook accompanied the artist on his expedition in 1859 to New Hampshire and Maine, where he drew sites such as Dixville Notch, the White Mountains, and Peaks Island, Casco Bay. Gifford used
such graphite studies as the basis for oil paintings worked up in his studio, such as A Home in the Wilderness (1866).

A Shepherd with His Flock clevelandart.org/art/1991.210
The notion of the pastoral ideal is made explicit in the work of Jacque. In 1849, along with Jean-François Millet, Jacque moved to the village of Barbizon, which by then was an established artist’s colony. There he painted, drew, and etched rustic landscapes in which man and nature
coexist in perfect harmony.

Tobias Healing His Father's Blindness clevelandart.org/art/1969.69
Rembrandt created some of the most extraordinarily creative and emotionally poignant drawings of the Dutch golden age. With spontaneity, a deft hand, and deceptive simplicity, he recorded deeply personal observations of the world around him. Although this drawing depicts the climactic moment of the Book of Tobit, an apocryphal book of the Old Testament, it also references 16th-century life in Amsterdam. Instructed by the archangel Raphael, Tobit’s son Tobias restores his blind father’s sight by rubbing his eyes with fish gall. But instead of illustrating the miracle in explicitly supernatural terms, Rembrandt showed Tobias using a scalpel to perform a cataract operation on his father’s left eye-a procedure pioneered in Amsterdam in 1635 by the eye specialist Dr. Job Janszoon van Meekren.

View from My Window in Rome clevelandart.org/art/1974.21.a
From the early 18th to the late 19th century, the Tischbein family produced twenty-eight artists and
artisans who were active in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. Carl Ludwig Tischbein first went to Italy in 1819, and by 1825 he was a professor of drawing in the Academy of Rome. This charming view of rooftops and walled gardens is made more immediate by the presence of the cat.
