Also makes me want to get more into the Marxist account of alienation. I’ve thought a lot about alienation in a psychoanalytic register (esp in the marxist-inflected Institutional Psychotherapy paradigm). But still have much to learn about the relations between psychic, social & material alienation

I think so much of the dangers (always at least partly realized) of childrearing becoming this narcissistic exercise of self- and class-reproduction. Lovely to see a humane, communitarian, socialist writer “take up and take on” (as Backer often says) those contradictions.

This is a really nice reflection on parenthood. Makes me feel hopeful anticipation for myself and an appreciation for my friends who are parents. (Both things I already felt, but this shines a new light on them.)

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

When Menendez later tried to enter the Norbertine community in Southern California (the very one Michael “Urban” Hannon used to be at), several of my brother’s friends who had witnessed the harassment wrote to the vocations director about it. I don’t know what became of it all, though.

Wow that’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. He repeatedly sexually harassed my brother in college — pressured him into altar serving at Juventutem stuff, and then kept arranging scenarios for them to be alone together where he could make creepy advances

Anyone talking about “wokeness” as though it had some specific content which some group wants you to adhere to is, at the very least, far too steeped in right wing discourses

Another unarmed victim shot by ICE agents in Austin today. The Austin Mayor and Rep Greg Cesar are calling for an independent investigation, which would be conducted by Austin PD and Texas Rangers. Something tells me we won’t get any justice, just like we haven’t gotten justice in Houston.

I’m sure an actual Roman historian could nuance this, but it really did mean open to all and not belonging to any private individual or interest. The public-private distinction is one we inherit from the Roman republic. (In fact, “republic / res publica” means “the public matter/concern/thing”)

Personal statements for residency don’t matter as long as they’re basically literate (in the most banal, literal sense) and not obviously sociopathic.

Yes. It can technically be done on your own but it’s helpful to do it with a director. In 2021 I did a 5-day retreat with the exercises at the OVM reatreat house in Milton, MA

the media’s reaction to this anthropic guy’s tweets are a great demonstration of how they don’t want to inform the public, they’re just happy to go along with a sensationalist narrative handed to them by deluded and self-interested tech people

I don’t know if there has yet been a form of life in the church that really answered that failure, or spoke to the new needs arising in industrial or postindustrial society. At times I’ve thought the Catholic Worker got close (obv not a religious society). Now I’m not so sure

I’ve always wanted to see mendicancy as a critique of the foregoing economic and religious modes, but one that didn’t have to be part and parcel of early capitalism. it started as a rejection of accumulated wealth, but became a way to own corporately—still short of the universal destination of goods

chris 🍉 @landericus.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I haven’t read Chenu, but the sequence of modes of production tracking forms of religious life seems correct from feudal to mercantile (w the caveat that both, esp mendicants, played some role in shaping those productive forms: eg Franciscans inventing the corporation and some accounting practices)

This is an area I’d like to read & think a lot more about. I’m a psychiatrist in community health in nyc, and I work with a lot of unhoused ppl or people who would be if not for supportive housing. I also see how housing alone can fall short without the forms of social connection that make up a life

I hadn't known this about Maine. But the federal judicial system also does not have parole at all. And apparently 15 states either lack parole entirely or curtail it so severely it functionally does not exist. www.vera.org/news/parole-... www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/grad...

We need to expand parole. Many states are doing the opposite.

This is my best shot at summarizing into a coherent narrative what I know of the Early Philippe Affair using my familiarity with the Complete Works of Jacques & Raïssa Maritain and the letters between J. Maritain and his friend Charles Journet. I hope it's helpful as a starting point of some sort.

We were sorry to miss it. Instead, we had an uncommonly unpleasant TSA experience on the way to the free republic of Catalunya. From the train to the airport, we caught some fireworks and a house burning down (likely from fireworks). As good a way as any to ring in 250. Hope to make yours next year

They started there. Their role was to harmonize Spanish fascism and Catholicism. You need modern liberal finance to make that happen. (Also, as others have pointed out, for decades a big piece of their own funding was from controlling Banco Popular and basically stealing vast sums)

Every marginalized identity CAN be weaponized against the yet more marginalized. At a social club for seriously mentally ill folks, I’ve seen hatred of the participants who are homeless & mentally ill: “They don’t want to contribute. They just want a handout.” Solidarity takes work and pedagogy.

The New School student government is suspending student funding for the campus Hillel chapter. They cite programs sending students to support the IDF, including units that killed a 78-year-old American, and killed 15 Palestinian emergency workers & buried them in a mass grave.

New School student government suspends Hillel from receiving student funds over organization’s material support for genocide

The Student government proclaimed Hillel “Not in Good Standing” in a majority vote after determining Hillel’s violation of a policy that requires all student organizations to comply with international law.

New York City (May 1st, 2026): In a first of its kind resolution for a U.S.-based university, the New School student government voted to declare their campus Hillel chapter “In Bad Standing.” This resolution bars the New School Hillel and the Baruch College Hillel from receiving any Student Government funds, co-sponsorship or events, or logistical support until The New School Hillel disaffiliates from Hillel International and ends its promotion of programs that violate international law.

On May 1st, The New School Student Government voted to accept a report produced by the Registered Student Organization Compliance Committee that detailed Hillel’s repeated and egregious violations of the University Student Senate’s Declaration of Principles, which requires all university Registered Student Organizations to comply with and adhere to international law. The report detailed violations from both the New School / Baruch College Hillel and the larger Hillel International with which they are affiliated. The violations include Hillel’s participation in three different programs that send students to volunteer in Israel on military bases to provide logistical support for the Israeli army as it wages a genocide in Gaza:“Hillel on Base,” “Onward Israel,” and “The Volunteers for Israel (VFI) / Sar-El Program.” . The report, the result of a lengthy investigation undertaken by the TNS Student Government’s Registered Student Oorganization Compliance Committee, also details several multi-million dollar direct partnerships with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote pro-genocide propaganda through the New School / Baruch College Hillel.

At a certain point one has to put aside this credulousness toward the Church (understood here as the human institutions & the people inhabiting them) as though it were in any way apart from the politics of the rest of the world. The evidence is plain to see at every turn if you don’t shut your eyes

I would still consider this too generous. They never met a neocon opinion, no matter how much at odds with the entire Christian tradition, that they didn’t rush to champion. The big difference is their masters in government worked harder to give religious fig leaves to the evil they did.

It’s funny how if you read about Jose Maria Escriva for like five minutes your only options as a Catholic are “universalism is true” and “not every canonization the pope comes up with is true”
