If you're wondering why authors are getting so rabid here: First Anthropic stole our books. Then we got denied compensation because of US unjust copyright law and publishers failing to meet their contractual obligations. Then publishers and agents apparently claimed author shares. Now this.

I love Banks' worldbuilding, especially the way he matter-of-factly imagines a universe in which humanity has got its collective shit together.

“Truth is, there’s very little ambitious science fiction left; most of what little is still published is fungible military SF or space opera with no intellectual or emotional heft. The genre that was once rich with speculation and social comment has shrunk to a tiny puddle of escapism.” (Yup.)

In the best SF, the world the author creates is not just “setting”; it becomes a character in the story and vehicle for exploring ideas. I recently finished Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time, which does this brilliantly. 🪐📚 #sciencefiction #worldbuilding #childrenoftime

This is my 2nd favorite Brunner novel after The Sheep Look Up. The description of what we now know as the Internet was truly prescient (even if his speculations didn't get everything right). If, for some reason, this isn't classified as cyberpunk, then it's certainly the grandfather of cyberpunk.
