What might global fossil CO2 emissions do in 2026? Based on IEA estimates, fossil CO2 emissions could decline 0.5% in 2026. A big 2.4% drop in oil & small 0.5% drop in gas, is partially offset by a 1.2% increase in coal. All very uncertain! www.energiogklima.no/nyhet/hormuz...

Home in Labrador in winter as a kid when you go to school in the morning it's just getting light. When you get out of school it's just about dark. Permanent Daylight savings would mean it would be light after school for an hour. Huge difference imo.

The world has made real progress in steering away from some of the darkest climate futures where global emissions doubled (or more) this century. But as David Wallace-Wells and I note in today's NYT, we are not out of the woods yet, and climate uncertainty is not our friend: www.nytimes.com/2026...

Or at least at some Universities. Whereas at others these fields have been combined under the same schools or depts. I know in my field I am in Geography but teach mostly Env Sci and Env Studies students tbh. Yet in the workplace Geography degrees tend to have higher pay / employment (stats can).

I'd love to see a deeper dive someday in the field of Geography, Environmental Science and Environmental Studies in terms of how institutions have shaped demand in those disciplines. There's a huge myriad of approaches being used across Universities in Canada. Seems like EnvSci has outcompeted Geog.

Agreed. In practice it's a terrible idea. I guess we'll see if Yzerman lets things go in that direction (he won't). But in Brady's case, I could see a case for playing a bit more hardball given his actions and his father's etc Pretty clear the other team was notified of his attentions informally...

I think the point is he wouldn't have bent to Tkachuk giving only one team on his trade list. If he wants to be stripped of the C and play the next two years out then fine. But the alternative is he gives his GM a chance to get even some value by not limiting to 1 team.

I mean there's no one to build them in most of the rural parts. The gov in Canada has not ensured that they got built so it's become incredibly easy to find a charger in cities and along major highways but otherwise its hard to find things that charge, and especially quickly.

Robert Way @labradorice.bsky.social · 21/06/2026
Yeah but good luck finding those types of chargers in most places. Canada completely botched its EV rollout and left huge swaths of the country with virtually no coverage. Leaving my hometown there's a section of road with 415 km with no EV chargers. It's the only route connecting the province.

Does El Niño forecasting have their own version of a "hot models" problem? There are currently 13 seasonal forecast ensembles used to predict future El Niño / La Niña. Diversity is good, but there remains broad disagreement among them, with some suggesting all-time records. 🧵

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.
Spaghetti chart showing Oxford Radcliffe Observatory daily maximum temperatures for every day of the year from 1815 to 2026. 211 years of historical data are shown as very faint grey lines tracing a seasonal cycle from around 5°C in winter to a summer peak of roughly 25–30°C in July and August. A blue smoothed 30-day mean line highlights the average annual temperature cycle. The 2026 line is shown in bold red, running from January through to late May before spiking sharply upward to reach 33.7°C on 26 May, well above the entire historical grey envelope for that time of year. A single dashed red reference line marks the previous May record of 30.6°C set on 29 May 1944. The 2026 reading exceeds this by 3.1°C and, in statistical terms, is the 6th most anomalous maximum temperature in Oxford's 211-year record, ranking as the most anomalous May maximum ever observed and coming within 0.6°C of the all-time June record of 34.3°C set in 1976.

If you haven't sent one yet, please consider it. ECCC's new alert colours are nice. But for severe weather warnings, radar is foundational.
