As always, thank you to everyone who subscribes to the labeler, recommends it to their friends, and otherwise tries to not give clicks to Nazis.

This means the labeler should be back to running normally and if we trust in my ability to monkey-patch the code, it will continue to run smoothly. Secondly, the labeler can resolve some of the shortened URLs that it previously struggled with, meaning you won't be bamboozled by link shorteners

Labeler news! After weeks of frustration, and with major thanks to @dax.pryce.io for pinning down the issue, the labeler is now able to maintain a database of nearly 5 million labels (and counting) without attempting to load all the labels into memory and crashing the whole thing.

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 28/09/2026

I think it's good now? I am hopeful that it will backfill labels from posts while it was down but no guarantee. I'm keeping a close eye on everything and will continue to triage if necessary.

Labeler will be down temporarily while I work on some issues! Hopefully won't take very long.

020

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 04/09/2026

Sorry for the labeler going down a bunch today. I'm trying to figure out *why* it is doing this and the most infuriating part of troubleshooting right now is that I need to wait for it to crash to try to figure out why it crashed but due to my own incompetence I am not getting any data from crashes.

020

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 04/09/2026

But again I don't know because whatever happens means my logger doesn't log anything until it reconnects to the jetstream... So yeah.

010

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 04/09/2026

Okay, set up heap snapshot again to hopefully figure out what is causing these memory spikes but I never know what I'm looking at when I try to decipher those. I already implemented fetch timeouts for the url fetching stuff and pretty sure the db isn't the problem... I'm thinking the jetstream?

Aaaand it went down for like 15 minutes just now and I have no idea why.

000

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 04/09/2026

No worries! Usually the label is applied pretty quickly, but it can take a few minutes sometimes and I'm always trying to improve the code. Glad you're finding the labeler useful.

If you can send me the link to the post I'll take a look! Probably the post slipped through while the labeler was down.

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 03/09/2026

Hmm, you're on the main bluesky PDS from what it looks like. Do you see a label on this post? (I just grabbed a random one that popped up on my feed, not trying to single anyone out)

110

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 03/09/2026

I have the container stats for the last 7 days and it literally shows steady memory usage around 500mb until it suddenly shoots up to nearly 3gb yesterday afternoon and crashes, recovers, crashes, recovers, I reboot the VPS and it goes back to normal.

110

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 03/09/2026

And by "full restart" I mean either spin down the container or reboot the VPS entirely, because when I tried to ssh in last night during the latest outage I couldn't because some process was tying everything up. The labeler container is limited to 2GB memory so idk what was eating the rest

100

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 03/09/2026

Noticed the labeler went down multiple times yesterday for "apparently no reason"* so I went in and did a few minor changes that hopefully will help. *okay it was running for 7 days, had OOM, and then proceeded to crash a few times after restarting. Maybe it just needs a full restart once a week

I'm sure your writing is great, insightful, helpful, etc. I know you can host for free on Substack. But you have so many options out there which allow you to host a free blog or newsletter and *don't* give money to Nazis, and it is really quite simple to post your writing there instead.

010

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 30/07/2026

"But you could make a separate label to use for accounts!" I could. I still stand by all the above reasons for why I don't want to. Thank you for reading and for boycotting Substack! 7/7

150

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 30/07/2026

Plenty of people on this platform post links but don't have their own newsletter on Substack. I don't want them to get slapped with an account-level label just for reading and sharing things hosted on Substack. 6/

120

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 30/07/2026

Even if Johnny Journalist hosts their newsletter on Substack, they may post useful information and links to articles/resources/etc that don't lead to Substack. Those posts should not get labeled, but an account-level label could confuse people. 5/

120

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 30/07/2026

I don't want this labeler to get banned for "harassing" particular users by putting an account-level label on them for using Substack. There was a labeler that identified followers of known transphobe and Nazi defender Jesse Singal which I believe was taken down for "harassment" or something 4/

120

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 30/07/2026

simply because Johnny Journalist's entire account has been labeled. The default moderation setting on this labeler is info/warn but some people set it to "hide" which hides all posts with the label. Therefore they would never see posts from an account with an account-level label. 3/

120

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 30/07/2026

I really want to encourage people to host newsletters elsewhere, so this labeler is more likely to have false negatives (i.e., fail to label a link to a Substack) if it encounters any issue with a link. If Johnny Journalist suddenly leaves Substack I don't want their posts to still get labeled 2/

120

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 30/07/2026

Since I get asked this on occasion I may as well address it in its own thread (and later link it to my pinned post). Why does this labeler only label individual posts, not accounts? Journalists may eventually migrate from Substack to another platform and I don't actively monitor this. 1/

122

Anti-Substack Labeler: Substack Funds Nazis @labeler.antisubstack.fyi · 30/07/2026

I don't issue account-level labels, only labels on individual posts that link to a Substack. Labeler is unfortunately still down but I am trying to figure out why!

Why is Naomi Klein Funding Substack’s Hate Machine?

Writers of good conscience should not be building new media companies on the back of a platform that opportunistically coddles white supremacy.

When your readers sub to your Substack newsletter they are literally funding the content and ideology that your newsletter and your social or political research project mean to counter. It's pretty straightforward.
