@lutoma it's in the Mastodon for Android app (2.11.7). It's also happening with sunny.garden. But these are new accounts that I've just logged into for the first time today, not sure if that has something to do with it?

@essjax thanks! Filing this away for future consideration (for now I wanna try joining an existing server). 🔖

@essjax intriguing! Is there anything you need to do to self host besides basically pay masto.host? What kind of maintenance is involved?

I'm thinking of moving from mastodon.social and I'm curious about people's experiences elsewhere. Stuff that matters to me: * moderation, balanced by openness and being welcoming to newcomers * fast updates / I want to forget about the tech stack because things just seem to work * demonstrated […]

@scott @kzeta I use an email server I made from an old payphone and a paperclip. Anything less would be ludicrously insecure.

@futurebird I suppose that's all part of being with a bunch of humans! And for the most part, I appreciate the values behind a lot of the complaints I see.

(Turns out, according to many posts I've seen around here, I *did* choose the wrong server when I decided to go with mastodon.social. But thankfully most people are pretty welcoming, regardless.) @futurebird

When I joined, even as someone who had spent 15 years in the tech industry (+ many years before that studying online interactions)... I felt intimidated by the fediverse. I probably joined Mastodon about 2 years later than I would have otherwise, had it felt easier. I was confused by what all […]

No ads. No* algorithm. No influence campaigns. No AI. No bots. Just people on the internet talking to each other about all the little pointless things, (and big incredible things) in our lives. *I realize that the demonization of the term "algorithm" in social media is unfortunate in many ways […]

I’m about to finally get my act together and move my little-used Google Workspace account elsewhere. Is there anyone who would recommend something other than Protonmail for mail? I have file storage covered and don’t need calendars. I want to use a custom domain and a way to use IMAP clients is […]

This week I'm participating in "We ain't buying it." I won't be shopping at Amazon, Target, or The Home Depot. Instead, I'll buy from independently-owned stores, farmers' markets, small local chains, online and in-person craft fairs, non-profits, and the like. #WeAintBuyingIt #boycott #USPol

Image of the logos from Amazon, Target, and The Home Depot all crossed out, with the words "nah" and "nope" scrawled next to them. The logos are all copyrighted by those companies; I added the cross-outs and scrawled the text in GIMP. Composition and writing CC BY-SA Kate Zimmerman.

RE: sfba.social/@minmi/1156000522643318… Imagine... what kind of modern technology would we have, if it were optimized to help humans flourish? Could be something as simple as a user experience tweak on an existing device. Or could be a wholly new imagined thing! #AskFedi

@minmi imagine how much better photography-, arts-, and other image-/idea-sharing technology would be if it were truly optimized for human flourishing. Advice for Artists: Are you working on a painting of nature or where nature plays a key role? Consider adding ants. Ants are a part of every natural environment that isn't a glacier. If you already have a few ants, why not add more? How many species do you have? Even if it isn't a painting of […]

Due to circumstances well within our control (me being ridiculous), things have escalated from there. (Rainbow approves, though, which is what really matters.)

A painting of a black and white cat in a basket hangs on a wall next to a photo of the same cat sitting in the same basket underneath the painting. A gallery card under the painting reads: Isabella Mielczarek (b. 2010) Basket Kitty, 2025. Oil on canvas. Gifted to the gallery by the artist.
A gallery card under the photo reads: Ted Mielczarek (b. 1979) Life Imitates Art, 2025. Photographic print on paper. On loan from the artist's collection.

A black and white cat stands on the edge of a large bathtub. Behind and to its left is a basket. On the wall above the cat hang an oil painting of the cat in the basket, and a framed photo of the cat sitting in the basket underneath the painting.

My cat Rainbow likes to sit in this basket in my bathroom. My daughter painted a portrait of Rainbow in the basket. I hung it in the bathroom, naturally. Then I got a photo of Rainbow sitting in the basket underneath the painting.
