one of my New Year’s resolutions is to CAD more. I never learned in school but have futzed around with it a bit to make some simple designs to 3D print. would love any tips/recommendations/tutorials etc. that helped you learn!

Amazing post. One suggested addition, please please use data classes whenever possible instead of dictionaries. Raw dictionaries cannot be inspected without running the code and printing the keys. But data classes are basically self documenting! (And they can be typed).

I’m so glad I live during the period of human history in which we invented YouTube. I just watched a documentary about butter. I suppose this is another way of saying that I’m grateful to have turned in my last graded problem set ever!

I wish media did a better job framing “scaling laws” for lay folks. they’re empirical best-fit models on a log scale. 10% more data doesn’t help you, you need 10x.
Screenshot from article: “I asked OpenAI and Google about all this. They didn't respond. Another top Al startup, Anthropic, sent me a statement saying, "We haven't seen any signs of deviations from scaling laws."”

If you're running into this problem (not having sufficient access to local public library books), the Queens Public Library offers out of state access for $50 (basically for this reason). I obviously haven't used it so don't know the details but worth looking into. qpl.libanswers.com/faq/375079

it’s good to leave cities sometimes to remind yourself what food is supposed to cost. take-out Chinese in my family’s town in NC is $10. as god intended.

a good life has many stages. birth, bar mitzvah, recognizing that functions are vectors, marriage, teaching your children that functions are vectors, death, etc.

kind of interesting- on Twitter I had 15k but ~10k came from rock licking. so compared to the “organic/topical” 5k, I’m already up to ~half that from starter packs. that’s 4 years on Twitter vs <4 weeks here. it’ll be interesting to see if there’s organic growth after starter pack growth saturates.

many nonlinear control texts derive a quantity “weak local nonlinear observability” that they claim is similar to but not exactly “nonlinear observability” via the lie bracket. what stops this quantity from being exact in the case that the weak local observability matrix is full rank in every state?

If you are an AI scientist, please do not tell the public that "AGI" is near. That is a failure in your scientific duty to communicate science to the public. You are entitled to your feelings, but the position that "AGI" is near is not scientific. It's a hope that all remaining problems are easy.

I know Bluesky has the sauce because I’ve already had someone follow me (from a starter pack) unfollow me (presumably over something I said) and then a few hours later follow me again (presumably from a different starter pack)

As faculty, this is a good time to reflect on what we can do to provide a safe environment for our queer and trans students. Bathroom bans at the capital are likely going to be reflected on our campuses both in terms of normalizing discrimination and potentially local and widespread policy.

maybe you’d call this financial stupidity but I’m almost always willing to spend a few extra dollars to buy something in-person over online because I enjoy the process of being sold to. same for eating at restaurant over take out. I don’t mind tipping (extra) because I ENJOY service work.

ICLR should not allow public discussion until after decisions. It allows Oscars-style award/accept campaigns by high-profile allies. Even for great papers, that can’t be part of the review process. The only reason it didn’t happen before is because it was against community norms, which are changing.

Arguably the best part of grad school is getting to constantly reinvent yourself. If I made this intro post every year of my PhD I would claim to have been doing different things each year. Can’t wait to find out what I’m up to next year!
