This morning I finished “When We Were Feral” by @shastagrant.bsky.social Truly remarkable. As someone who teaches young people, with two little ones at home, it ripped my heart out in a way only a great book can. Maggie and Erin and Sarah will live with me for a long time moving forward. Masterful.

I had a piece rejected over twenty times. Had given up on it. Did a little work on it this morning and sent it out expecting more of the same, only to be surprised by an acceptance within hours. I’m listening to a writing lecture and the prof says you don’t need time away from writing to refill the well, but to notice things. My daughter is toasting her own bagel (exciting for 5yo) and calls me over to show me that the plastic tie from the bagels is shaped like a bear head. Praxis.

I read an article earlier this year of someone making a goal of it. Aiming for 100 rejections in a year. I adopted that. I’m at 47. Every one hurts a little bit, but it’s also another step on my way to the goal. Proof that, if nothing else, I’m trying. It helped a lot.

Just finished this. A beautifully brutal novel by @miriamgershow.bsky.social Her ability to find the voices of such a disparate yet connected cast is inspiring. And that final line has shades of Gatsby in its brilliance. Highly recommend to my 4 followers.
