Yesterday we held our inaugural AI in academia coffee hour @uwmadison.bsky.social — a forum to discuss the existential issues AI raises in academia. Our topic and pre-read was the Leiden declaration. It couldn’t have been more timely with OpenAI’s drop of math results dsi.wisc.edu/rise-ai-hq/a...

Interesting coincidence that the Nobel to Halzen for “the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin” comes on the same day as this milestone that there are things beyond our own galaxy 103 years ago.

Congratulations to Francis, my friend and colleague! I am happy to see his bold vision and tenacity honored at the highest level. I took his class @uwmadison.bsky.social, taught from his book, and now I’m proud to be his colleague. His enthusiasm has never waned, he is a timeless physicist.

It’s especially good today because neutrinos are just so much fun to talk about. They’re little! They’re weird! They sneakily transform themselves to other flavors when no one is looking!

Screw-ups should be costly. There should be a high government fine on top of it, plus paying to clean-up and re-secure the systems hacked. These are equivalent to industrial accidents and should be treated as such, imo

I created a new interface for the 4D Rubik's cube, that I like better than the standard 4D > 3D projection. It flattens the hypercube by cutting along the faces and unrolling it into 3D. You can see all 8 cubes at once and it's more intuitive theoryandpractice.org/cube4d/hyper...

I just learned that Fred James passed away. Fred was one of the most impactful people on the statistical practices of particle physics: the author of Minuit & a book on statistics; a proponent for frequentist approaches. He had a huge impact on me, and I will miss him en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MINUIT
