Wells traveled to Cairo, investigated the lynching, and campaigned aggressively against Davis's reinstatement. Her crusade held law enforcement accountable and proved that sheriffs who surrendered prisoners to mobs would lose their jobs—effectively ending public mob lynchings in Illinois. (cont)
