"Almost 50 years later, Watson-Semmons is still waiting for legislators to accomplish what she wanted: to force the state to release her original birth certificate. By not doing so, she said, California is maintaining secrets and lies." The lawmakers are OK with #adoptees dying, denied their OBCs

The way this mother was silenced by those who claim to be proponents of healthy living after sharing about her daughter's near death experience with ecoli is telling. Reminds me of other instances of people talking over and silencing victims because their stories challenge the believed myth. 🥚

Outreach for Life is a far-right, Christian advocacy group "dedicated to upholding the inherent value of every human life from conception to natural death." So it's anti-choice and pro-adoption, and this "now famous adoptee" is their new face to spew their PR. outreachforlife.org/wp-content/u...

This "made for TV" story re an adoption reunion with a St. Louis Man and dad (member of Doobie Brothers) looks EXACTLY like what it is: PR and organized media placement. Just found the "lost son" is a speaker at pro-adoption organization's event. Quacks like a duck. www.facebook.com/outreachforl...

It's not really the feel good story you think it is. I wish people would stop to think more deeply about how incredibly difficult it is to navigate reunion as an #adoptee. Like #adoption itself, finally meeting your first family is not the fairytale we think. It's a complicated, emotional experience

Didn't we all fantasize about our first parents being famous? When I first learned my father's name I did a Google search and discovered a famous golfer with the same name. For a moment I thought maybe he could be my dad, but no. My dad's just a regular guy 😂

For those who just walked in: the de facto definition of being adopted in the United States is the act of pulling your birth certificate from the public records, sealing it, and replacing it with a falsified (“amended”) record that claims your adoptive parents gave birth to you then and there. 🥚

#adoption is amazing. not only can you pay a broker to source a human being you get to call “your child,” but the state will retcon your fantasy into legal and pseudo-biological reality.

The show supports the myth that #adoption is some beautiful thing that happens in a person's life and is great. Nothing traumatic to see here! It's dehumanizing to see this storyline portrayed in this tired old way in the 2026. My god! Do some research!

KayelaWrites @kwrights.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It's clear the writers of the show don't view the birth mother as human at all. She is a doe-eyed, young woman whose story doesn't matter. The reasons leading up to this moment in her life don't matter, even when those storylines are important to every other character on the show. That's #adoption!

KayelaWrites @kwrights.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Not only is the birth mother depicted with no depth, but they actually talk about her circumstances like they don't matter. She has no family support, no job, and faces housing insecurity. She even becomes homeless in one of the episodes! But are we given any insight into how she feels about that? 🥚

KayelaWrites @kwrights.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
We learn this patient was abandoned by her mother at 10, which is most likely what led to her suicide as an adult. I can't believe how tone deaf the storyline is! Just amazing. 🥚

KayelaWrites @kwrights.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I've have many thoughts about that #adoption story line in Shrinking. At the moment I'll say for a show built around trauma, I'm disappointed but not surprised at how adoption is portrayed. We're given more insight into a patient who appeared in two episodes than we are about the birth mother.

🥚 Postscript: the fact that adopted people IN THEIR 70s are still seeking to know who their families are, why they were tossed into a plane so that an infertile couple across the ocean could have a baby, and how they can finally attain a sense of belonging…should prompt profound reconsiderations.

I read "Relinquished: The Politics of Adoption and the Privilege of American Motherhood" a few years ago. In it, the author asked various biological mothers what they would've needed to keep their baby and it was so precious little that it was devastating.

An excellent book, isn't it? And it's that kind of knowledge I'm speaking about here. If we know these mothers want to parent but lack support, we should be very uncomfortable with #adoption being offered as the solution.

Ghost Child: Uncovering Family Secrets from a Back Porch to the Yucatan
A young woman from a blue-collar background--aspiring and driven--spent over twenty years quietly wondering if the family who raised her was truly hers. At thirty-two, she confirmed the unthinkable: she is the biological daughter of another, entirely unknown family. Her search unfolds like a page-turning mystery, leading to an astonishing discovery--her biological grandfather was a U.S. diplomat and author, photographed in the Oval Office with President Kennedy, greeting Charles Lindbergh on the tarmac, and meeting with Rosa Parks and international leaders.
