Movies these days are dim, flat, dull. You know it, we know it, everyone seems to know it. But is it true? To sort through the wreckage of this discourse, today's Film Formally gets back to basics with a @willaharlowross.bsky.social-and-Devan-hash-it-out special. In MULTIPLE ASPECT RATIOS!

"I can always spot 'CGI'" - - - - - - - - - toupee fallacy

The crowd thing is a true epidemic. I have not seen one example of a CGI crowd that works. GET IT OUT OF YOUR MOVIE! If it's in your treatment, write another scene

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Honestly this is one of my favorite Joe Thornton videos due to the breakdown, as I've added "this is a no helmet party" to my lexicon as of 6 years ago but also that Ryan Reaves (who I fucking DESPISED) ended up being one of my favorite Sharks is in the vid. Love SJ. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffLy...

It's starting to actually make me angry, how often I see this said online with hundreds of likes and everyone going "yes yes, nothing is good and everyone's bad at their job" I have a video with the DP from Widow's Bay saying it's not true and the sole comment basically says "he's wrong" like WHAT

I came across this a while back and ended up saving it because it was so accurate and depressing

Konukaame 8h
Managers who once staffed projects with 10 junior coders now achieve the same productivity with a pair of senior developers and an Al assistant.
You don't necessarily have 10 junior coders on a project because they're super productive, but because otherwise in a few years you won't have any new senior developers, and there will be a massive bidding war for the ones that are left.
But because no one wants to train or take care of employees any more, piegress in tive years is sacriticed in favor of job cuts and "efficiency
today.

Seeing all the DNEG CGI artists on Linkedin point to their name in the credits of The Odyssey after crunching on its CGI for months and then going to social media and seeing everyone say how it avoided CGI is something else. (actually it's not something else -- it's the same as always)

new term: "Open Matte Weirdoes": bozos who think they're totally getting ripped off when filmmakers choose to show a portion of the originally exposed negative/sensor as their framing of a movie, and it's a literal crime not to give the audience every mm/pixel of image that was captured

The thing about social media age restrictions is that it treats today’s internet as an inevitability we all just have to deal with. The internet (and the WORLD) wasn’t like this until like four dudes were allowed to own & monetize as much tech real estate as they wanted. Fix THAT problem.
