If you joined Wsocial and don't like your personal data displayed because you accidentally ticked that box, the only solution seems to be to delete your account. On the other hand, if you want full control of what appears on your profile join Bluesky, Eurosky, or any other PDS.

People think I'm joking when I say that disinformation threatens democracy and sovereignty, and that this means that kinetic options should be on the table, even if ideally not used.

When a startup has an advisory board of that magnitude why not build an totally independent platform from scratch? It's the part about Wsocial I find most baffling.

Dear Ewan, drinking only accentuates grief. Best thing is to move physically and allow time to cover the darkness and make your loss more bearable. If there is some woodland, a field, a park nearby get out of the house, close your eyes, breathe, listen, focus on the future. A big hug.

My support for bluesky/atproto is pretty much explicitly a "political" project. It is bad for a small number of (mostly right-wing) people to literally own all the sources of media. Open-source algorithms + the ability to move your account without negative network effects opposes this.

I once helped run and co-owned a social media website that at its peak had about 2 million visitors a month. As well as the successes, we had plenty of fails, hacks, and complaints, but we always owned up to our mistakes instead of making up shite excuses.

Goodness, this just feels like W is setting up its users for failure Why would they fork Bluesky and act as if its a completely silo'd app if they are being aggregated like any other open social web/atproto thing and have all of those resulting consequences?

This has been my point all along. No one would give a 💩if Wsocial had built its own thing like Monnet, BeReal, Wedium, and so on. But W did the sneaky thing by leeching from an open source, then bolting the door shut, and presenting the project like some independent, made in the EU, social network.

Most wusers think that wsocial is a totally independent app and are therefore mildly horrified when non-wusers comment on their weets.
Due to unsolicited interaction this post is now read-only.

What would be nice is opt in verification for authors and creative people that links their work to their profile in an irrefutable way, blockchain style. That would be something of real value in the age of AI.

Wsocial will not take off. Its only "innovative" aspect is that it's human verified, which is of very little interest to most people. Its approach is stiff, unimaginative and sterile, and that no longer sells.

Our apologies for the service interruption this afternoon. This was due to a fault with Hetzner’s DNS service (a sort of GPS for the internet), which is still ongoing. We have put in place mitigation to reduce the risk of this occurring in the future.

So if Muu was a country it would be a lot cheaper 😀
100
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
Country codes are different because they are not applied for or bought. Two-letter suffixes such as .es, .it or .si don't go through ICANN's $227,000 process. They're derived automatically from an international standard, the ISO 3166 list of country codes, which ICANN doesn't control.
100
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
They are. You are buying into a deregulated domain monopoly because there is no other choice and the whole issue deserves a lot more scrutiny than it does. Many governments, the EU included at one point, wanted ICANN brought under intergovernmental oversight. The US refused.
100
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
It's not cheap.
100
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
Is it worth it, considering we can already use a custom domain as our handle? I think not. This money would be better spent if invested into the platform's development.
000
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
What's normally involved in registering a top level domain: evaluation fee, currently $227,000 per string, paid to ICANN. Then there is the yearly fee of $26,000 , also to ICANN, plus technical registry operator + lawyers and consultants. So we are talking $500k or more over the first few years.
100
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
Personally I think bsky is a bit of a mouthful and bky would have been nicer (like xyz) but if it can help Bluesky thrive why not although the process is very expensive.

Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
You would need to apply for the .muu suffix with ICAN and it's quite a long process bu (perhaphs) worth a thought. Mind you, that would imply a change: from mu.social to mu.muu and everything else to .muu 🐮
100
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
Conclusion: We need a non for profit alternative to this racket.
000
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
Verisign runs a near-risk-free monopoly with very high margins. In 2019, ICANN removed the price caps on .org, .info and .biz entirely. The .org case showed what that leads to. After the caps were removed, there was an attempt to sell the registry to a private-equity firm for about $1.1 billion.
100
Kudai @kudai.mu.social · 07/10/2026
And then there is the .com .org .net - Regulation moved the wrong way. ICANN once capped prices on legacy TLDs. Then it loosened the caps: In 2018, the .com agreement was amended to let Verisign raise wholesale prices by up to 7% in four of every six years.
