People ask me what Scythe is capable of. Here it is in the hands of an industry veteran where he made everything in Scythe.

These are SO good. If you're aiming for 32px per meter texel density, this is all you'll ever need. They work wonderfully in Scythe too because there's trims/hotspot textures in here.

We now have a modern lightmap tool with Scythe's Auto-Lightmapper Tool. Unreal's lightmap unwrapper is ancient, and Epic likely won't be improving it, so I'm confident in saying this is the best lightmap unwrapper in Unreal today. It uses the same lightmap unwrap as Godot.

For UE 5.8+ only: Soft selection. This is something that came in UE 5.8 by Epic, I just hooked it up to Scythe.

If you don't know what a hotspot is, it's a texture with a bunch of different well-defined rectangles that Scythe will perfectly fit to geo faces. You can use trimsheets too. Here's the what the UVs look like from the above example.

A few weeks ago I released an update to Scythe, my Unreal Engine level editor, which has a lot of QoL features and cool new stuff. Here's a list of some of the cool stuff starting with "hotspot locking":

Great article. The only thing I want to kindly mention is HL: Alyx doesn't use a single brush. I know you said it's a revamped system, but it's static meshes that are made to feel like brushes. I've been working on a level editor for a few years that does the same thing as those HL: Alyx's tools.

More tools being made for Unreal that give level designers a bit more agency without needing a dedicated coder or even going into blueprints. It's @joewintergreen.com's Input/Output plugin that mimics a lot of what you could do in Hammer.

Scythe now has its own UV Editor called the "Fast Texture Tool" and is built with speed in mind and heavily inspired by Source 2 Hammer. The blue rectangle is the size of the geometry in the world to help with your texel density.

Cylinders don't need seam marking, it just knows it wraps back on itself so it marks a seam. It breaks your selection into its own island.

Learnin bout hotspots with Scythe. Just a lil setup and like 20 minutes of extruding faces is enough to start having a workable thing! Real fun to have some good tools to work with right in editor

It's a bit out of the initial scope. It's something that maybe I'll consider down the road but for now all I can say is I'm not currently planning on it. I gotta get this thing released.

For hotspots/trimsheets, I can't imagine anything like this is possible with triplanar stuff that isn't crazy espensive. I think one big benefit here is texture memory and cheap materials. This one material can be used for a thousand different meshes and all look quite unique with the edge wear.

Kronok @kronok.bsky.social · 10/02/2026
Mainly to give level makers more agency in what they're making. Scythe gives you a lot of triplanar-like effects without the triplanar material. With my understanding of triplanar materials, I don't think you can do this with a triplanar material with a single material instance.
010
Kronok @kronok.bsky.social · 10/02/2026
Maybe I'm still confused, but if you're relying on only triplanar mapping, you use that with Scythe. If hotspots are introduced, they need a UV channel to be able to overlay it on top, which means it needs to unwrap the hotspots. If you still want no UVs, I don't have a clue how that would work.

Kronok @kronok.bsky.social · 09/02/2026
Triplanar with hotspot/trimsheets? No clue how that would work. Or maybe I don't understand what you mean.
