Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this. Smashed records. Curtesy of Garrett Roberts.

Another thing I made this year: Real and implied birds.
A six-panel cartoon titled "real and implied birds". In the two panels in the top row, there's a rough legged-hawk sailing through the sky, next to a smooth legged hawk, which has smooth human legs. In the second row, there's a great-crested flycatcher looking dapper, next to an ok-crested flycatcher that has just a slightly less nice crest. In the third row, there's a mountain chickadee standing up on stones, next to a valley chickadee peeking out from a dip between stones. In the fourth row, there's a least bittern standing in some reeds, next to a most bittern that is enormous and stomping through a city, with people running in fear, helicopters overhead, and an overturned car on fire.

✅ Do you use R or Python? ✅ Are you an ecologist/biologist? Then you might find our website ALA Labs useful! ALA Labs is full of how-to articles to visualise or analyse biodiversity data. Some are for beginners, others are advanced/experimental 😀 labs.ala.org.au 🧪🌏 #rstats #python #quartopub
ALA Labs frontpage & text logo. ALA LABS text is in white, formatted as off-centre stacked text. Underneath is smaller text, "Experiments in code, data analysis & visualisation from the Atlas of Living Australia." The background is green grass with a Southern Brown Tree Frog in the middle, hanging onto the grass. It has a darker brown top and lighter brown underside. The frog's eye is a rich dark yellow, with a black pupil in the shape of an oval, stretching from the left to right side of the eyeAn animated scroll through an ALA Labs post, showing code, text and visuals to make a data visualisation in R. The article is on how to make a hexagon map of Australia, where each hexagon is an area of Australia, and each point in the hexagon is positioned and coloured to represent a species.Examples of dataviz that ALA Labs posts show how to make in R. They are colourful and fun. One of them is even 3D!

Table of content for "quick data vis": basics of R coding, tidy data frames, ggplot, mean separation, proportional data, heatmaps, relationship data, plot assembly.

Firschein's Salamander (Pseudoeurycea firscheini) from Veracruz state, Mexico. A male; the fleshy little nubbins at the snout's end are called cirri, and carry pheromones and other chemical signatures to the nostrils, in order to find females and locate rival males. #herps #NaturePhotography 🌿
A side view of a salamander fills the image from left to right. The tail is at the right, the body pointing to the left, but the front third of the sally curves back to the right, with the face angled towards the camera. The overall color of the sally is dark gray with an overlay of very tiny light gray dots. The limbs are the same color, along with streaky blotches of a coppery orange. The tail has the same background color, but also has many irregular blotches, whitish and with some coppery orange hues here and there. The effect makes the tail resemble a lichen-spotted branch. The eyes are large and bulging from the head, and are completely black.

Look at those Ceropegia ampliata flowers! Yep those are flowers, this shape is typical for this genus. Inside of the tube there're hairs growing upside down, so that once an insect gets in, it has to struggle to get out, during the struggling the flower gets pollinated. #iamabotanist #plantjoy 🧪🌾🌸

We humbly interrupt your scroll to bring you the news that Wisdom—the world's oldest known wild bird—is breeding again, age 74. Go on girl. 😍
A screenshot of a social media post from USFWSPacific that reads:

"SHE DID IT AGAIN!

Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, is back with a new partner and just laid yet another egg.

At an approximate age of 74, the queen of seabirds returned to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge last week and began interacting with a male."

This tweet is paired with an image of two Laysan Albatrosses at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Wisdom, the oldest known wild bird, is shown alongside her new partner, demonstrating her enduring legacy as a remarkable seabird.

It's turtles all the way...over. #TurtleTuesday #herps #NaturePhotography 🌿
Photo of a still pond, with the far bank at the top third of the photo, filled with bushes and trees. In the middle of the pond is a log, running across the entire width of the photo. Perched on the log are 36 basking turtles, all in a line, most of them facing away from the camera. The photo is taken from distance, but their narrow heads and necks can be seen sticking up from their oval shells. Between the line of turtles and the far bank there is a single turtle basking on a small branch. Perhaps there is no more room on the log, or maybe this single turtle wants some alone time.

A White-bellied Reed Frog (Heterixalus alboguttatus) from near Ranomafana, Madagascar. Also called the Starry Night Frog ❤️ A species I had hoped to see on my visit, and I saw exactly one. This one. #herps #NaturePhotography #FrogFriday
A frog in center frame, viewed from the side as it clings to a twig, diagonally with its head looking up to the upper right corner. The frog's belly is a stark white, and its back, head, and limbs are all black and covered with bright yellow oval spots. The eye is the same color as the belly, with a black pupil.

A White-lined Chameleon (Furcifer antimena), observed at dusk, Reniala Reserve, SW Madagascar. The blue scales are kinda mind-blowing. #herps #NaturePhotography 🌿
A large, heavy-bodied chameleon, facing right, clings to a branch and fills much of the image. The scales on the chameleon's body are pebbled in texture, and the basic body, tail, and head color are a bright green. There is a line of larger scales running down the body from behind the eye that are pinkish in color, and they are surrounded by scales that are a royal blue in color. There is a collection of the blue scales just behind the eye as well. The chameleon has a crest, which is a pinkish hue, and a small nubbin of a horn on the nose, which is yellowish in color. The green tail is curled underneath, in contact with the back feet.
