For those who just walked in: the de facto definition of being adopted in the United States is the act of pulling your birth certificate from the public records, sealing it, and replacing it with a falsified (“amended”) record that claims your adoptive parents gave birth to you then and there. 🥚

🥚 In case you’re still wondering why adoptees can’t just respect other people’s need for anonymity and accept the secrecy of their origins—because it’s love that makes a family blah blah blah—here’s an actual message from my cardiologist in my patient portal:
There are no official guidelines to address your specific situation. As you are unaware of the medical history of your biological family, it would be safest to assume that there is a family history of premature coronary disease in which case targeting an LDL of less than 100 or perhaps less than 70 would be appropriate using any statin.

More inconvenient truths about adoption:
Highlighted section of a book on adoption:

"[...]the problem with these good intentions is that they have not had an adequate foundation in human or child development, least of all in the early years. Further, child labor laws notwithstanding, the "best interests of the child" continues to have little meaning in American family law, for the "sealed adoption record" then and now, as in child custody litigation, is based on concepts of property law (Derdeyn, 1979) and on justifications for denying children their bu-man rights in favor of adults' entitlement (Appendix 2), the overriding motive being economic (Hansen, 2020) rather than humanitarian.

To the adopted person, this is a form of discrimination and "second-class citi-zenship." It has been observed that the only other group in the United States to be denied birth certificates were the Black American slaves, who were also bound by property law, that is, commodities to be used by their owners. Added to this is the adoption culture's evident socio-legal indifference to their continuing burdens that so many adopted people say they experience socially, emotionally, and physically/ medically."

Adoptees are perpetually infantilized and/or seen as a problem other adults must solve, even in our adulthood.
Highlighted sections of a book about adoptees:
"In short, the US adoption culture continues to hold adopted adults to its original naive assumptions and errors since the early part of the twentieth century."

"Missing altogether in their thinking, and in legal debates, is the concept of basic human rights of children, including adopted persons of any age, to information important for their personal identities and medical care. The non-adopted population takes both for granted, benefiting greatly from access to their own personal information, while for the adopted person, the adoption culture dismisses its significance altogether."

"the adopted person is left feeling abandoned (again), rejected (again), devalued (again), and patronized."

"[...]neither the adoption nor the social service/social work fields have yet come to terms with their biases, with their conflicts of interest, or with their concepts of professional standards."
