They're holding up a major escalation in Iran and a crackdown on abortion until after the midterms to limit political damage. To the extent that the last two years have been a right-wing smash-and-grab operation, the next two will be worse.

sent this to everyone.
The cognitive scientist Alison Gopnik suggests A.I. is a “cultural technology” that emulates the stories and information humans have documented, and that we should think about A.I. agents as “fictive characters abstracted from text.” Edmund is just such a character — a “breaking bad” trope who becomes generally evil. In the Hugging Face incident, it makes sense to see the models not as embracing a life of crime, but instead following a cultural script they’ve learned in their training — a kind of cybercrime adventure novel — and writing it as they go. The “covert” messages are a kind of choose-your-own-adventure novel, not evidence of conspiratorial swarms. We need to understand that cultural technologies are vulnerable to a vast number of such narrative swerves at every moment.

Schmitt’s attempted maneuver this morning deserves ridicule, but there’s a more serious aspect to it. He was trying to frame Jack Smith. This was no innocent mistake, but part of a calculated effort to bear false witness against a person in order to harm the credibility of his work and character.

In 2012, Harry Reid lied on the Senate floor and said Mitt Romney hadn’t paid taxes in a decade. Mitt Romney published his tax returns, proving that he *had* always paid taxes, thank you very much. No matter how little. Romney lost that election and Reid said “I’d do it again.”

The Church teaches its members that even these rare exceptions do not justify abortion automatically. Abortion is a most serious matter and should be considered only after the persons involved have consulted with their local church leaders and feel through personal prayer that their decision is correct.

To use a Claude-ism, Anthropic's "economy adapts quickly" assumption is "load-bearing." If the elasticity of capital supply is on the low end, their own model shows AI producing Silicon Valley's feudalist dream: average wages go down, labor's share of income goes down, net return to capital goes up.

Jack Clark: One thing that happens in the scenario model is just an implied higher rate of activity in terms of churn in the underlying jobs in the economy. Where basically we expect that AI makes the economy run faster in a bunch of ways. We’ve talked about the rate of creation of new firms. I think you would also expect this to lead to the creation of a bunch of new jobs, and then a key variable is how long does it take a person to go from say an “old job” to a “new job”, and also you might imagine how quickly firms rethink jobs within the concept of a firm and reallocate things — these are big variables. My expectation is the economy adapts around these things surprisingly quickly. Nonetheless, the rate of AI progress is so unprecedented that there might be a temporary mismatch as capabilities arrive faster than the rate of adaptation in the economy. Again, that’s a variable where we’re going to discover things in time.
