The dirty secret is that rich people need to live in politically stable regimes in order to keep their wealth. They will piss and moan about taxes, but they will not flee en masse. They like paved roads and not being kidnapped too much.

I really only do that personally over the course of fully researching a character/title for one of my guides, which is my job, or to read along with Kid Krisis, which is pure joy.

Demand more from what you consume. The food should be better. The music should be better. The movies should be better. These aren't luxury goods! They are not jewels & precious metals! We don't have to be millionaires to enjoy them! We only have a limited time on this Earth. Let's spend it well.

"custody of the eyes" resonates with me deeply I spend a lot of my life/time defending my eyes from certain things and questioning why people are so okay with giving up custody of theirs

Had this "Sushi Casserole" for dinner last night and it was legit one of the best things ever made in our house. It had all of flavors of tuna rolls or California rolls, but with tofu, and made 4+ *generous* servings for the price of maybe 2-3 boxes of maki rolls. nutsandtwigs.com/vegan-sushi-...

I love picking out where certain elements of each of their playing and songwriting styles first start cropping up in the early stuff as they move away from Skiffle and interpolate more and more of their love of African American music.

The New World bulk Sour Bears are legit the best candy I have ever had and they are going to ruin my life and my teeth. Picture Sour Patch Kids, but not quite as sour, less sticky on the teeth, and with real fruit juice taste. They are all I ever think about at every hour of the day.
A bowl full of rainbow colored New World bulk Sour Bears, a gummy bear candy covered in citric acid. They have taken over my entire life.

What's wild for me is being on an Electric Vehicle subreddit and watch people suggesting Tesla's as if they are totally normal things to still be buying today, right now, brand new.

People really keep using Twitter and Substack and buying Teslas like it's nothing, huh. I know there is no truly ethical consumption under capitalism, but I think "avoid lining the pockets of Nazi-sympathizers" is a pretty clear, bright line you can draw.

Watched Obsession earlier this week. Vacant and deeply unpleasant. A film totally bereft of the wit and wonder it briefly shows off in the first 20m. There's a real sense of the script not really knowing what to do to elevate its central thread, which has been done many times over and often better

Couldn't sleep last night and watched Backrooms. (I know, weird choice.) Absolutely loved it. Some wobbles here and there with the plot, but it's such a new and fresh approach to horror suspense and the production design was incredible. It reminded me of how I felt when I first watched Primer

Greens. On a party level, no one else is serious about the future of NZ for our young people - both the environment and the economy. They should get 100% of the vote. On an electorate level, it would be strategic to vote for Labour, but their candidate is an equivocator who I refuse to vote for.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

This year I've mostly only tried catching up on Apple TV prestige stuff, since it's all so buzzy and I have a subscription at the moment. Hated the 2nd season of Severance, dropped Pluribus for being badly edited, just quit Widow's Bay for bad writing (wild to me that it won a bunch of Emmys).

I love (i.e., HATE) that if I click ONE THING other than friends and kittens on Facebook, it tries to adjust my algorithm to show me a whole new raft of topics and pages - which I proceed to systematically block until it just shows me friends and kittens. Can they just add a kitten setting?

Why won't the pope even consider the possibility that AI chatbots are conscious/ensouled? Well, that's simply not possible under a Catholic understanding of "the soul." Today on Fragments, a brief explainer of this situation. Link in replies.
why does the pope think that AI Can't be Ensouled/ Conscious? Followed by the infamous exchange between Pope Leo and "Spectromachina" wherein "Spectro" declares "pope, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you do not understand? You're not an AI influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no weight in this debate and you're being used as a mouthpiece to swap public opinion. how many local models do you run?"People are mad at the pope. People were mad at the pope, previously, when he released his encyclical on AI. People are mad at him now, again,2 as he tweets about AI, and as reporting reveals that Anthropic tried really really hard to get him to say that AI was/ could in the future be alive/conscious/sentient/ensouled.

What follows is a brief explanation for why that’s not going to happen.

Overwhelmed with gratitude today but also just overwhelmed. Not forever, and not even for the whole week, but just in this very hour. So many people need things from me, but they are all good people and it's fine to tell them I'm full to the brim right now. And that's what I'm so grateful for.

Very that. However, maybe they know their market and know that most people need some kind of nudge or opinion to create divisiveness in their choices - so, they were trying to introduce that kind of doubt into my process. I respect that, but you need a different routine for a higher-info shopper.

AI is an employee who never says no, never talks back, and who has no emotions, so you're free to be an asshole to it without consequence. Certain men have been fantasizing about this for their whole lives. They will happily burn the world down to create it.

I don't say that as some sort of "SCREW YOU, SALESPERSON!" punishment. I didn't feel confident buying from someone who didn't listen to me and who clearly hated the things I liked about their products. 10m later I was looking at fish and the pet store person was SO CONSULTATIVE over the $15 fish.

Was at a store ready to make a relatively big purchase today. Sales person walked up. I asked them about the one feature I was waffling on. They proceeded to spend 5m negging all the features I liked and then showed me other brands (not even more expensive!) Hope they didn't need the commission 😬

A chart showing new EV & PHEV sales over the years. The market absolutely fell out when the new National govt had a fucking insane idea to stop incentives to get EVs, then when Trump thought he should start a war instead of going to jail for being a Pedo & fuel prices went through the roof, EV sales have risen again

the cult of the superior machines is inherently a patriarchal cult (like nearly all cults in recorded history) its theology classifies “AI” systems as either wives (systems that exist to serve and empower Great Men) or Gods (theoretical future systems, male-coded, that become the Great Men)
