Yes not only did Qobuz include Modernism in the sitez hand picked New Release section it got an amazing review.

ALBUM REVIEW: PERENNIAL - MODERNISM

Most of the cool, loud, retro-futurist bands working these days would've been at home in the downtown New York scene circa Marquee Moon. Not Perennial. This New England garage-punk trio idolizes Quadrophenia's Brighton, Stax Records' Memphis, and the rest of the time their songs feel like they're set in some rainy, neon-lit, sound-stage city, infiltrating a crime thriller from the stereo of a getaway car. Partly that's the bleep-bleep-bleep morse code feedback and siren riffs screaming from Chad Jewett's guitar on this new record, Modernism. It's also Chelsey Hahn's eerie organ interludes, which cap tracks like "Baby, Are You Abstract?" and the flagship "Perennial '65."

Perennial's previous album, Art History, arrived just two years prior. Since then they've released the Beatles-homaging Perennial '65 EP plus a deluxe version of Art History containing a bunch of extras. Still, one wouldn't rush to call them prolific. Modernism—like the three full-lengths before it—barely cracks 20 minutes. There isn't enough time for their formula to wear. Not that it would: Jack White mangling Militarie Gun's microsongs, the latter's power chords replaced with hairy single-string riffs blasted through twin Vox amps? Yes please. And when you think the songs can't go any louder, the band says, "hold my beer"—see the outro to "Modernism," or the final time through the chorus of "The Shadow." Such thrilling energy surges are all the more miraculous given Perennial's go-for-broke-and-then-some baseline.

That means the breathers are crucial. Perennial knows to add pauses not just within their dynamic riffs but throughout the sequencing. "Granny Smith Apple" is all clunky clavinet, skiffling drums, and a synthetic flute melody reminiscent of a family sitcom's opening music ("Perennial is filmed in front of a live studio audience"). The reset primes the whirlwind opener of Side B, "The Shadow." The album's second half—and the band does make a point, right there on the cover art, of using traditional A/B sides—is even bigger than the first.

Jewett and Hahn overarm the hot potato back and forth for "what-do-we-want?/ when-do-we-want-it?"-esque vocal barks, nonsense lines like "the red, red robin goes bop, bop boppin'" delivered with the same urgent conviction as the "modernism's coming for you" war cry. The lyrics poke around pop culture: Cheshire cats, Otis Redding, Kerouac, Halloween, The Avengers' catsuited spy hero Emma Peel. They even go Edgar-Allen-Poe-paranoid on "Me and The Magpie." It's not quite The Raven but certainly less amenable than that boppin' red robin. © Hayden Merrick/Qobuz
