1 Apr 2025. A solitary jaunt to visit Fairy Falls located in Te Wao Nui o Tiriwa (The Great Forest of Tiriwa) | the Waitākere Ranges. The surrounding native forest is deeply quiet, dense, and wise. It’s seen much and observes humanity with a sceptical eye. I don’t blame them. Taken at a close, upward angle, the photo shows various tree-dwelling native mosses and ferns of different shapes on a tree trunk. The growth displays shades of green, rust, and sage which are so pleasing to the eye. The tall, thick tree trunk is mottled grey with hints of darker slate tones. The green leaves and tree limbs in the background are muted and blurred.

Known as epiphytes (or "epiphyte tapestry" or "hanging moss gardens"), this unique set-up of moss isn’t along for a free ride. They are valuable allies as they trap and hold moisture for the benefit of the forest environment, and little insects can set up house.

As the Earth continues to heat up, and the world literally burns, I worry for our fragile forest (among so many worries, to be honest).
