I've always been captivated by the "Freedom" sculpture on Vine St., of a figure breaking free of a wall in 4 stages, with the final figure on the sidewalk, arms outstretched and faced lifted. I think it makes our city more interesting, which is the most any of us who love Philly can hope to do. 🧵1/3

This photograph captures the essence of kōyō (or momijigari, the seasonal custom of autumn foliage viewing), a cherished pastime in Japan that dates back to the refined courtly culture of the Heian period (794–1185).
Framed in a breathtaking display of autumn brilliance, a towering canopy of fiery crimson Japanese maple (momiji) and luminous golden ginkgo (ichō) expands above a rugged, hand-stacked stone retaining wall (ishigaki). At the base of the wall, a thick, glowing carpet of fallen ginkgo leaves covers the earth like a golden tapestry. Standing amidst this fallen foliage are two quiet figures holding bright, matching umbrellas—one vibrant yellow and one deep red—strikingly echoing the dual-colored canopy towering above them. The soft, diffused light of a damp autumn day illuminates the scene, evoking the tactile coolness of mountain air, the subtle scent of damp earth, and the quiet rustle of fallen leaves underfoot.
Both the maple and ginkgo serve as quintessential fūbutsushi—poetic seasonal markers that signify the peak of autumn across the archipelago. The presence of the weathered stone masonry and the corner of a traditional timber building suggests the sanctuary of a temple or shrine precinct nestled in the mountains. Here, the deliberate integration of architectural stonework with the surrounding forest demonstrates the enduring tradition of Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery in environmental design), where human cultivation acts in gentle harmony with the wild cycles of nature.

#BlueskyArtShow #Lights Light exhibit at Sensorio in Paso Robles, California. The hills are covered with thousands of solar-powered lights that shift in colors. sensoriopaso.com #ECK #PasoRobles #WestCoastKin #Sensorio #LightExhibition
It is just after dusk and the thousands of colored lights are illuminated. They cover the rolling hills with many different colors, giving the effect of patches of glowing wildflowers. The golfball sized lights are on a stem, so if it is breezy, they will sway with the breeze. They are placed close together to maximize the color and effect. Not seen at night are the scattered small solar panels placed throughout the exhibit. There are paths through the light, so visitors can walk through the fields. Sensorio has added other light exhibits as well, but this is my favorite. Located in Paso Robles, California as a permanent display.

Greetings. 1961, Japan
Bowing gracefully beneath a heavy curtain of falling snow, two women exchange a formal winter greeting on a pristine, snow-blanketed path. Their oil-paper umbrellas (wagasa)—one patterned with a classic concentric ring (janome-gasa)—tilt gently toward each other, forming a protective canopy against the flurry. Clad in winter haori coats layered over patterned kimono, their silhouettes offer a striking contrast to the monochromatic storm. The woman on the right, wrapped in a vibrant vermilion jacket, bows deeply with a folded white shawl resting in her hands, her posture mirroring her companion’s respectful ojigi (bow). Elevated on wooden snow clogs (yuki-geta) fitted with protective leather toe-covers (tsuma-gaki), they stand near a snow-laden stone lantern (ishidōrō) and the heavy plaster shutters of a traditional earthen storehouse (kura).
The scene highlights the extraordinary monozukuri (artisanal mastery) of traditional foul-weather gear: wagasa hand-assembled from bamboo spokes and oiled washi paper capable of repelling heavy snow, alongside yuki-geta engineered with raised wooden teeth and front hoods to keep white tabi socks pristine. The practice of aisatsu (formal greeting) displayed here underscores the enduring centrality of ritualized courtesy, binding the community through gestures of mutual reverence.

Aesthetically, the seamless expanse of white snow functions as a natural realization of yohaku (active negative space), erasing the contours of the ground to isolate the figures within an elemental canvas. The tilted paper umbrellas create mobile, architectural kekkai (protective micro-boundaries), establishing private sanctuaries that intersect to form an intimate space of social warmth.

The Japanese character for "love" (愛) is composed of three parts: a person looking back at the top, a heart in the middle, and feet beginning to walk at the bottom. In other words, it represents the feeling of caring for someone you cherish and being concerned about them no matter where they are.

OGATA Kōrin(尾形 光琳 Japanese, 1658-1716) On one side Narihira and the pilgrim; on the other, chrysanthemums and a brook late 17th- early 18th century Ink, color and gold on paper
Set against a radiant background of burnished gold leaf (haku), a meandering stream of deep azurite blue sweeps across the circular field of this exquisite uchiwa (rigid hand fan) by the Rinpa master Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716). Rising along the bank, a cluster of white chrysanthemums (kiku) blooms in tactile, three-dimensional relief, their petals built up through the delicate technique of moriage using raised shell-white pigment (gofun). Supporting the blossoms are vibrant malachite-green leaves rendered with tarashikomi—a signature Rinpa method where wet ink or pigment is dropped onto an un-dried underlayer to create organic, pooling textures. The stream itself is layered with rhythmically oscillating gold-ink wave lines, an iconic graphic motif that would come to be celebrated as Kōrin-nami (Kōrin waves).

On the reverse side of this fan, the depiction of the Heian poet Ariwara no Narihira and a pilgrim directly anchors the work to the Tales of Ise (Ise Monogatari). The chrysanthemum-and-brook motif on the obverse side evokes the classical literary trope of kiku-sui (chrysanthemum water)—a symbol of longevity and courtly elegance (miyabi) derived from the belief that waters flowing beneath mountain chrysanthemums conferred perpetual youth.

Aesthetically, the circular wooden perimeter of the uchiwa functions as a portable kekkai (symbolic boundary), enclosing an idealized, eternal garden within a functional object designed to stir the summer air. Kōrin’s play between the tactile, sculptural relief of the gofun petals and the flat, glowing void of gold leaf showcases his mastery of yohaku (active negative space). Floating timelessly along the stylized current, these autumn blossoms evoke a poignant sense of mono no aware—the bittersweet appreciation of nature’s fleeting beauty—transmuted by Kōrin's brush into an enduring monument of courtly sophistication and decorative genius.

ALSO, POEMS BY A SLAVE. THIRD EDITION. BOSTON, PUBLISHED BY ISAAC KNAPP, No. 25 Cornhill. 1838.” Beneath the main title is a short abolitionist verse beginning “Some view the sable race with scornful eye…”Oval portrait engraving of Phillis Wheatley, a young Black woman, seated at a writing desk in profile. She wears a simple 18th-century dress with white neckerchief and cap, thoughtfully touching her chin with one hand while holding a quill pen over paper with the other. Men made war. Men lost the war. They brought it on themselves. It was women who paid the price. Women could no longer go along with men's wars. The war did not make women strong. Through the war, women found men out. - Hideko Takamine (Japanese actress, 1924-2010)
A black and white portrait of Japanese actress Hideko Takamine (1924-2010), seen from the chest up against a pale grey background. Her short curly dark hair frames a face tilted slightly downward, her gaze falling away from the camera. One hand rests near her chin with fingers loosely curled. A small round earring catches the light. She wears a dark coat with a wide collar. Soft focus holds the edges while the eyes stay sharp.
