How do you deal with compilations and various-artists albums in your library? Album artist tag, their own folder, or just let the chaos win?

Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Honest question for anyone who owns both vinyl and a rip of the same album: which one do you actually reach for more often — the record or the files?

Founder thought: a library you built yourself is like a diary. The odd B-sides, the album you ripped at 17, the one you bought after a gig. No catalogue change takes it away. Kontrole plays it from Plex, Jellyfin, Navidrome or Emby on iPhone + Android. No sub, no account. kontrolemusic.com

Founder thought: buying an album is still the best deal in music. The artist actually gets paid, and the files are yours for good. Kontrole is a player for music you already own, from Plex, Jellyfin, Navidrome or Emby on iPhone + Android. No sub, no account. kontrolemusic.com

Picard's perfect for that. Once the tags are clean Navidrome just looks so much tidier. Did you let it rename the files too, or keep your own folder layout?

Small founder thought: the music you own shouldn't go quiet when the signal drops on a train or a long flight. In Kontrole you can save any album or playlist from Plex, Jellyfin, Navidrome or Emby to your iPhone or Android phone. No sub, no account. Open beta: kontrolemusic.com

Curious, for anyone running a home music server: what's mostly in yours? CD rips, Bandcamp downloads, vinyl rips, an old iTunes folder? I'm building Kontrole, a player for music you already own. Plex, Jellyfin, Navidrome or Emby on iPhone + Android. No sub, no account. kontrolemusic.com

MusicBrainz Picard is good for that. Once the sort-artist tags match, most players fold them into one artist.

Small opinion: if you spent years building a music library, the app you play it with shouldn't be another thing you rent. Kontrole plays music you already own from Plex, Jellyfin, Navidrome or Emby on iPhone and Android. No sub, no account. Open beta, App Store soon: kontrolemusic.com

The Cult vs Cult, The split is a rite of passage. Picard with a sort-name rule fixed most of mine, but there's always one stray folder.

Good haul. Owning the stuff you actually replay hits different. Which ROAR record are you starting with?

Tags living in the files is such a good rule. Manual is slow, but at least every mistake is one you made yourself.

Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Fair worry. The servers handle music fine, it's the client side where it gets patchy. What would make or break it for you, offline downloads or playlists?

Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Navidrome on a NAS is such a nice upgrade once it clicks. Did you clean up tags before importing or fix them as you go?

The physical copy has a way of becoming useful again once the files start feeling too abstract. A blank CD case is a pretty good little archive.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The tagging is the bit that turns a good idea into a weekend-eating project. I get why the phone wins when the library is already there.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Thirty years of playlists is a real switching cost. The files matter, but so does all that accumulated listening history.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Those bargain runs are dangerous in the best way. A cheap CD haul can turn into years of listening and a few forgotten favourites.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The ownership part is easy compared with the last mile. A huge library is only useful on the go if getting a few albums onto the phone isn’t a chore.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That’s the best excuse to revisit the deep cuts. Obscure albums deserve a place in the everyday listening pile too.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The files can be perfectly organised and still leave you stuck with a recommendation system you don’t trust. Owning the library doesn’t mean the app understands it.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Keeping the discs as a backup still feels sensible. They’re a physical copy you can point to, even if the files do most of the listening now.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That split makes a lot of sense. Physical shelves at home, the useful part of the library in your pocket when you’re out.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
There’s something refreshing about a player that just plays the files you chose. The physical controls make the whole ritual feel deliberate too.

And then Jesse Welles on my walk tonight, but I bought that on Bandcamp & listen to it from stored files, so they can barely* profile me about that at all!

I got Jellyfin (self-hosted media streaming software - basically Spotify for music and movies you already own) working on this so fast, and I was like, you know, people are really starting to think about owning their own files, etc., I wonder if I could explain how to do this to other people

That's neat. I just bought music off BandCamp for the first time. About 80% of the money goes straight to the artist and I get actual MP3 or FLAC files immediately. I'm impressed.

Owning the masters changes the whole relationship with the music. It’s a lot more control than hoping a platform keeps treating the catalogue well.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Buying a few favourites at a time feels far more sustainable than trying to rebuild everything in one go. The library grows as you find albums worth keeping.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Buying the files is still the clearest alternative, especially when the goal is to keep listening after the service changes its terms.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It still matters when smaller acts make the choice first. A scene moving together can make the alternatives feel much less risky.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That’s a wonderfully petty use of an otherwise empty catalogue. At least the decision keeps your work available while making the platform carry it.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That’s a hard tradeoff when the monthly income takes the hit. I hope the people who value your work follow you to the places you’re keeping it.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It really is worth the upfront work. Having the files ready means the library stays useful wherever you listen.
000
Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That’s a serious library. Hope the ripping gave those forgotten albums a second life.

Kontrole Music @kontrole.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
There’s a lot of meaning in the way a record becomes part of someone’s life, not just the sound itself.

That’s the useful part of physical media: the availability decision is yours. A shelf doesn’t quietly lose an album overnight.
