This kimono features an all-over kiredori (overlapping scraps) pattern rendered in a sophisticated palette of deep purples, rich burgundy, navy blue, golden yellow, and taupe, creating a dynamic mosaic effect that suggests both broken pottery and stained glass windows. 1926-1940, Japan
The silkscreened faux-shibori technique demonstrates the innovative adaptation of traditional resist-dyeing methods through mechanical reproduction, allowing for precise geometric forms that would be impossible to achieve through conventional hand-tied shibori processes.

The artistic approach strongly evokes the geometric abstraction and color field experiments of European modernist movements, particularly echoing the fragmented forms of Cubism and the bold color relationships explored in Fauvism and German Expressionism. This cross-cultural dialogue was characteristic of the Taishō and early Shōwa periods, when Japanese artists and designers were actively synthesizing Western modernist principles with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The kiredori motif itself carries symbolic resonance, suggesting the beauty found in fragments and the creative potential of reconstruction—themes particularly relevant during a period of rapid social and cultural transformation. The overall effect creates a sense of movement and energy that transforms the kimono into a wearable work of abstract art.

“how do we win back trump voters in 2026” we don’t. we create an environment where admitting to voting for trump is so socially embarrassing as to render them completely inert. you don’t “win back” trump voters. you demoralize them into staying home. you make it a dunce cap

Bumble shark with bonus wooden standee 🐝 #art
An illustration of a bumble shark (bumblebee-shark hybrid), a creature that has the fuzziness of a bumblebee while retaining the body shape of a shark. It has six fins, a brown-and-yellow striped body, antennae, and wings. She is flying happily in front of lots of flowers pollinators love: sunflowers, lavender, carnations and daisies, in a little scene reminiscent of spring. Some colourful petals have fallen to the ground, and some very tiny bumblebees are also pollinating the flowers. The same artwork made into a wooden standee.

Wisteria tree at Ashikaga Flower Park, Japan. Photography by KotHat on photohito
Cascading like an ethereal, violet-tinted waterfall from an unseen sky, a curtain of glowing wisteria (fuji) blossoms overhead in a breathtaking nocturnal spectacle. At the base, a thick, ancient trunk twists with muscular grace, its weathered, spiral-grained wood anchoring a vast canopy-like arbor from which countless long, delicate racemes hang in dense, weeping clusters. Soft upward illumination transforms the mass of pale purple and magenta flowers into a luminous, suspended ocean of petals, casting a soft glow onto the petal-strewn earth below. The photograph evokes a dreamy, multi-sensory atmosphere: the sweet, honeyed perfume of evening blossoms heavy in the cool spring night, the faint, rustling whisper of racemes swaying in a gentle breeze, the soft hum of nocturnal garden air, and the quiet, awe-struck hush of standing beneath a ceiling of living light. Captured at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, this magnificent specimen exemplifies the centuries-old Japanese tradition of cultivating grand wisteria arbors (fuji-dana). Cherished since the Heian period as a symbol of nobility, longevity, and refined elegance, wisteria appears throughout classical waka poetry, aristocratic clan crests (kamon), and iconic theater performances such as the kabuki dance Fujimusume ("The Wisteria Maiden"). Preserving a tree of this monumental scale—with branches extending across hundreds of square meters supported by meticulously engineered timber trellises—represents a supreme testament to horticultural monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for living craft). Through generations of dedicated pruning, binding, and care, Japanese arborists have elevated landscape architecture into a living, intergenerational fine art.

A drawing of Cece from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, resplendant in mushroom-print outfit including small mushroom earrings, lace-fungi collar and her large lopsided hat with various mushroom varieties carefully arranged upon it. She has a pink bob and an arch expression.

The kimono features an elegant composition of ume (plum blossom) branches gracefully cascading across the cream-colored damask ground, painted with the sophisticated yuzen resist-dyeing technique combined with pigment dyes. Last quarter, 20th century, Japan
This rinzu silk furisode represents a beautiful fusion of traditional Japanese textile artistry with the naturalistic aesthetic that has long characterized Japanese decorative arts. The kimono features an elegant composition of ume (plum blossom) branches gracefully cascading across the cream-colored damask ground, painted with the sophisticated yuzen resist-dyeing technique combined with pigment dyes. The artistic treatment evokes the classical Japanese painting tradition of kachō-ga (bird-and-flower painting), where natural subjects are rendered with both botanical accuracy and poetic sensibility.

The plum blossom motifs carry profound symbolic meaning in Japanese culture, representing resilience, hope, and the promise of spring, as plum trees are among the first to bloom despite harsh winter conditions. This symbolism makes them particularly appropriate for furisode, which are worn by young unmarried women during significant life celebrations. The flowing, organic arrangement of the branches demonstrates the Japanese aesthetic principle of asymmetrical balance, creating movement and vitality across the garment's surface. The damask background, with its subtle woven patterns of flowers and butterflies, adds textural depth while complementing the painted elements. The overall design reflects the continuing influence of the Rinpa school's stylized naturalism, updated for late 20th-century sensibilities while maintaining the essential elegance and symbolic richness of classical Japanese decorative arts.

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."
Post from NYT reporter Eric Lipton

"What an odd moment in United States history.

A U.S. president is running an overtly political campaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government.

Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit."

Steps leading to a temple in Noboriro, Japan.
Ascending into the atmospheric stillness of the night, a grand covered stone stairway (Noborirō) climbs steeply beneath a rhythmic timber arcade. Lined along every stone step, small square paper lanterns cast a soft, candlelight glow across the weathered flags, while iconic oval paper lanterns (chōchin) hang suspended from the heavy wooden ceiling beams above. The warm, amber radiance filters through white washi paper, carving an illuminated path through the surrounding darkness. The stark contrast between the coarse, unpainted timber posts, the smooth stone steps, and the gentle, flickering halos of light creates a deeply tactile sensory atmosphere: the cool night air of the mountain, the faint aroma of incense drifting from above, and the hushed, reverent stillness of a sacred ascent.
Located at Hase-dera in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, this famous 399-step covered corridor—known as the Noborirō (登廊)—was originally erected in 1039 by Chinen, a priest of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, in gratitude for a miraculous healing. Functioning as the primary pilgrimage approach from the Niomon Gate to the temple's National Treasure Main Hall (Hondō), the stairway features three distinct sections hung with unique oval "Hase-style" lanterns. During special evening illuminations such as the annual Kannon Mantōe (Ten Thousand Lantern Ceremony), hundreds of lanterns are lit to guide pilgrims toward the temple's 10-meter gilded Eleven-Faced Kannon statue.
