Elisabeth Anscombe on how to summon the courage to ask a question at a seminar.
Screenshot reading “And so I just went up to Miss Anscombe.
Everyone else was terrified off. And I
said, Miss Anscombe, how do you
manage to summon up the courage to
ask a question in one of these seminars?

And apparently, what Anscombe told her
was, I just repeat one of their sentences
back to them, look puzzled, and say, but
why? And then they look terrified at me.
And that does work.”

A delightful example of why we don't use free text fields for data that needs to be analyzed/tabulated. Unless the dataset is going to be small enough to code to clean results quickly and the outcome is going to be this funny, in which case I think we should! (With alt text)

... except to add, it's fun to step back and be amused by the way movies project their own values onto a different time. Say, fighting, OK to feel ambiguous about that, but main character *must* remain faithful. Thus no mention of e.g. the couple of kids that were the result of O meeting Circe.

Also count the times a predator (🦖 or whatever) is attacking and wastes everyone's time by stopping to roar. Even the goshawk in "H is for hawk" screamed when going for rabbits. No self-respecting ambush predator would...ah well I think I've got better things to do.
