I'm really curious about the extent to which the PCQ has replaced the old ADQ (and perhaps CAQ), while the CAQ itself fully took on PLQ territory The whole Quebec City region is just fascinating, the way it consistently refuses to be part of either of the major voting coalitions

Though I was able to dig up the 2022 version of this... generously put, polling for city council seems quite difficult web.archive.org/web/20250227...

When the condemned tells jokes about the hanging, it's gallows humor. When the executioner does, it's part of the humiliation of execution.

background on cold pizza: www.nytimes.com/1998/07/23/w... (article also includes the phrase "The tempest in the tomato sauce")
Cold pizza has become a hot topic in the race that will decide who becomes the next Prime Minister of Japan.

It started when John F. Neuffer, a political analyst often quoted by the foreign news media here, described the front-runner, Foreign Minister Keizo Obuchi, as having ''all the pizazz of a cold pizza.'' Since then pizza jokes have abounded and pizza has had top billing in the Japanese press.

The Foreign Ministry, however, fails to see the humor.

''Unfortunately, Mr. Neuffer's 'cold pizza' is now too famous,'' said Mikie Kiyoi, director of the ministry's international press division. ''Of course, anyone can say what they want, but to have one country's prime ministerial candidate described as such is, well, sad.''

I can't remotely fathom a standard from this lol The operating principle across the board is "most gov'ts get 2nd terms, many get 3rd, some get 4th; most elections during the cycle are uncompetitive" except BC which is consistently competitive. AB we keep expecting to be competitive but it never is

I realize this gives “increasingly nervous federalist: “ but I distinctly remember 2018 also feeling like a stalemate, and then at the end it just wasn’t (my guess is the CAQ gets the bandwagon again)

Oh I see what’s happening, I think “うち” in this context means ”among which” (ie with the previous figure as the denominator) rather than “at home” So it follows the first figure is all accidents, suicides and otherwise

Does this not say instead Collisions involving people, Suicides, and % suicides (2nd figure / 1st)?

Yes. People who work running media businesses report that micropayments just never make business sense. Subscriptions are so much more lucrative that it pretty much always makes more sense to chase a much smaller number of subscribers than micropayments. bsky.app/profile/josh...

hey I heard you like sankey diagrams that show huge populations making terrible decisions
A very complicated Sankey diagram showing the usage of electricity in the United States. Or the left are sources of energy and on the right are consumers, so, for example, nuclear is on the left and residential is on the right. Petroleum dominates.

IMHO the two ways that life in developed democracies has gotten worse is 1. People are spending less of their time on things they find meaningful due to compulsive Phone use 2. Housing costs too much in high opportunity areas Other issues are real and significant but also red herrings tbh

Wave buttons are a bit sleeker than push buttons, but the icons are still confusing. A general ”open” button should not be represented with a wheelchair icon because then you just look around for the non-wheelchair option - opened lock, closed lock.

One thing I always say about polls about young people is that people overread exit polls about them as being fixed for two reasons. 1. There is always a new cohort of young people at each election 2. Young people are especially prone to being politically volatile

The reason we don't conclude that, despite the copious evidence and our alleged intelligence, is that we are burdened with a set of instincts developed in evolutionary prehistory, which tend to override our higher thought. A super-intelligent AI would not be similarly burdened!

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

And on the ground, it must feel like "nobody is listening to our concerns" (bc ofc individuals exercising their autonomy and chasing opportunity in cities isn't a problem to be solved). Of course, most countries try to prop up regional economies with public funds, it just structurally doesn't work

(5/2) More pianists should write their own pieces and improvise. Conservatories spit out competent pianists by the thousands and competitions feel like a crapshoot - you really get to know a musician when they write

Really impressed that they put the whole network map on every station. (Not true of Tokyo, with its various networks, so no map shows everything.) I get why they show Line 2 as the central circle but really it should be an ellipse (cf Jug Cerovic's map: www.inat.fr/metro/seoul/)
