Reminder for those of us who leave things to the last minute - last day to respond to the NSF request for input on ocean observing 🌊 GO-BGC funding is crucial for us to keep putting floats in the water, and for me to keep putting Lego floats in my office!

NSF has funded over 80% of the world's BGC-Argo floats via GO-BGC, which ends in October 2026, so the global array will start shrinking. NSF is asking US researchers to weigh in on future ocean observing priorities: www.go-bgc.org/nsf/nsf-requ...

🌊 Every day, ~4,000 Argo floats observe the world’s oceans. They provide essential, open and freely available data that improve weather forecasts, early warnings systems, and climate predictions. Behind this network: more than 30 yrs of scientific effort. Thanks to all those who keep Argo alive!

Ocean monitoring is in trouble: without the US, it’s up to Europe and Asia to avoid losing sight of the world’s deep-sea ecosystems
Defunding marine monitoring networks could jeopardise efforts to avoid losing track of the world’s oceans and their precious ecosystems, which drive the blue economy.

Every spring, thousands of fish swim through the Oudegracht in Utrecht, looking for a place to lay their eggs. But the Weerdsluis is often closed. The Fish Doorbell helps. When you spot a fish on the livestream, press the doorbell. The lock keeper will check to see if the lock can be opened.

I would expect some correlation, i.e. stronger gyre = more dense water formation (os.copernicus.org/articles/21/...) = more O2 uptake See also this paper relating O2 & gyre strength: www.nature.com/articles/s43... Though these are about the gyre, which is related to, but not the same as, AMOC

The change in the figure is mostly spatial (eastern vs western SPNA), but certainly would expect these processes to change over time too. I’m currently looking at that, and preliminary results indicate O2 uptake & change are strongest in 2015/16, possibly related to North Atlantic Oscillation

And as a bonus, here is a video by @scishow.bsky.social which does a great job explaining ventilation based in part on my previous work: youtu.be/rIvt4s7CX2M - though I’d now argue the whole subpolar North Atlantic is the “lung” of the ocean rather than just the Labrador Sea 🙂 15/🧵
