Like dawg you KNOW that shit is only in D&D and its closest cousins. Why do you miss it so bad anyway? But yeah to your original point, it goes in both directions. That's why you gotta onboard new gamers with the right choice of game, so they have the correct opinions for life.

IME, by far the most painful culture shock for people who began in 5E is letting go of opportunity attacks. I'm 9 years in with my current group, we've played a couple dozen other games, and I STILL get "wait the enemy can just walk away from me??" and they look at you like this.

We may laugh when we see a game reminding the players "this is just pretend!!" but White Wolf covering their asses here was extremely necessary. You KNOW I would have been throwing kicks and shoryukens during a sesh of Street Fighter: the Storytelling Game.
Excerpt from 1994's Street Fighter: the Storytelling Game.

"A Cautionary Note

Although it probably goes without saying, these games are movies of the mind, not live-action exercises. There are plenty of misconceptions about this hobby; we at White Wolf want to stress the point that no physical combat is involved in the Street Fighter game. Gamers interested in pursuing the martial arts are advised to check into lessons at a reputable dojo. Real-life martial arts training has a lot to recommend it; fitness, discipline, self-defense and a sense of purpose. Street Fighter, however, is sheerly an imaginary pastime. Don't act it out, okay?"

Right but the distinction Nick is making is a rhetorical one. It's a matter of phrasing. Saying "alright, so you're doing [first step of stated plan]?" is less likely to derail than "what do you do?" because the latter often leads to overthinking and running in circles.
170
Dwiz @knightattheopera.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
I agree with @sfxprb.bsky.social . I think you may be misunderstanding. It's about not accidentally reopening a conversation after it's been settled because you're in the habit of relying on the phrase "so, what do you do?" The players all know those words indicate the BEGINNING of a new convo.

Also, here's a sneaky peaky at part of one of my procedures, which articulate this process decently (I hope):
Travel
Use this procedure whenever you’re steadily traveling over a wider area. Trips are usually measured in hours or even days.
Trip cycle
Follow these steps at the start of a trip:
1.	Players declare a detailed plan for the trip.
2.	The Game Master prepares for the trip.
3.	Together, resolve the trip step by step, including any encounters that appear.
First, discuss your intent for the trip. Set a destination, decide a route, and designate passive roles and other actions. We’ll follow the road into the forest, depart from the path to reach the pond, then decide where to go from there.
With enough information, you may plan your entire journey at once. But often, you’ll only plan it in segments. Forgoing any planning to instead navigate just one zone at a time is a tedious slog, though.
Next, the GM checks any notes relevant to the party’s plan. They consult their map key, determine if you’ll encounter anything during the trip, and calculate how long it will take.
Then, resolve the plan in detail. When you traverse or explore a zone, the GM briefly describes the most notable things you come across. You follow the road for two hours. When you cross the bridge, you’re blocked by a stalwart knight.
Pausing to interact may add time to the trip. Then, the GM moves onto the next notable thing on the path or the next step of the plan. At any point, you may deviate from your plan.
Finally, if you complete (or abandon) your plan, the GM updates the time record while PCs update resources. If you still have more traveling to do, then pause to discuss your next moves and form a new plan.

After writing koboldpress.com/kpstore/prod... with @prismaticwasteland.com I started codifying "make a formal plan" as a step in my procedures because of the very issue Nick identifies. Especially when playing online, I put plans into WRITING, to serve as our "agenda" for the next stretch of play.
