A properly aligned player could sound great, but with the head moving every time it changed channels, they'd get knocked out of alignment easily. Because of the speed of the tape, they could sound awesome, but were prone to failure because of that.

Your player must have been cheap and/or malfunctioning. If properly working, they ran at the correct speed. And you could fast forward, but due to the way 8 tracks looped, it wasn't advisable to do so.

Yeah, it was a bit before my time, obvs, but I've heard tales and it seems to have completely fucked everything up for a period of time until the waters receded. There was also a big flood in Lawrence in 1993 which I was there for, which wasn't nearly as bad, but did cause the Outhouse to close.

I think it was built in the late '20s or early '30s, but I wouldn't swear to it. But if you zoom in, you can see the flood line from 1951, so it was definitely before that.
