Not a recent observation but I'd forgotten to post: @annleckie.com's threads _and only her threads_ have lately been displaying to me as only the top post. I follow her just like I do many other posters-of-threads and I haven't seen this from anyone else. But I guess that 1/n is good for something?
An example of the thing I'm talking about. A short Ann Leckie thread only appeara with its first post (labeled 1/2), but above it a similar shoer David Cooper thread has both posts (with their 1/2 and 2/2 labels).

Intermixed is a post from Chicakō, revealing that I took this screenshot like three weeks ago.

Discord, why. I'm just glad I had a good solid education (Lord of the Rings as bedtime stories), because thankfully I know not to mess around with orbs from sinister sources, especially ones that come attached to vague promises of success.
A Discord pop-up, displaying an odd, vaguely round symbol that I suppose from context is an "Orb", even though it's not spherical and has a four-pointed concave star on the surface, in addition to other hard-to-interpret geographical features.

In bold, it reads "New look, new challenges", and then below: "Now your Orbs are easier to track and easier to earn." And finally there's a button labeled "See Challenges".

No further explanation is provided.

Yeah, it really feels like shades of this again.
A screenshot of a Tumblr post from user magicmooshka, reading:

"recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen Al for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen Al for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that Al can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen Al will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't."

More from tonight's date.
A signboard outside Quimby's bookstore in Chicago, reading:

"Back 2 Skool! Stock up on...

Gay Smut!

Furry Comics

Pre Apocalyptic Poetry

Communist Books

And More"

It's decorated with various doodles, including the Cool S.A pink cocktail in a mason jar, with a cucumber, a sprig of mint, and a yellow bendy straw twisted into a heart shape.

It was called the "Feelin' Cute", FYI.A vandalized-looking version of a very dated version of the FBI "do not copy" warning, like you would've seen on an old VHS, except this is digitally projected.

Among other things it has the "Calvin peeing on" sketch in pink-- which I'm usually not a fan of as iconography, it feels like it misses the point of Calvin & Hobbes, but I'll allow ot here-- and stating that infringement is awesome/encouraged and rewarded with free beer and a hell yeah. One of those big yard skeletons, lit up in purple from a light in its chest. It has a whole creepy glowing eye thing going on too.

Every time I'm walking across the southern edge of the Loop I'm reminded that downtown Chicago essentially has a pagan temple to Ceres (in her American mercantile aspect).
Statues of the personifications of Industry and Agriculture in the plaza right by Chicago's Board of Trade building. You can see behind them "Ceres Cafe", named for the famously faceless Ceres at the top of the building.

The "sickos" guy at the window, like from the Onion's political cartoon parodies, but it's the cat from Worker & Parasite ("Eastern Europe's favorite cat and mouse team" from the Simpsons episode "Krusty Gets Kancelled") saying "Da... hoch hech! "If you see this, we implore you to post a picture from whatever device you're using without explanation."
A sparsely populated timeline of human history from 10000 BCE to 2000 CE.

Labeled milestones are:
 - early agriculture, around 9000 BCE
 - earliest writing, a bit after 4000 BCE
 - sack of Constantinople, just after 1000 CE
 - Dashcon 2, the tiniest bit after 2000 CE

The point is of course to illustrate that the last two of those are pretty close together compared to the others.

Breaking with tradition to explain a joke. I have a lot of self-consciousness about being boring, as a quiet non-artistic queer. Some interpersonal things have given me cause for this. Internally punning on meanings of "bore" helps me keep perspective, unlike, e.g.: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob5j...

I don't know how to feel about these. At least, I suppose, they're not _all_ boring.
My "personal memes" (aka three word phrases repeated at least twice that no one else has said on Bluesky) from that tool:

"envious of Lews" [Therin Telamon; all repetitions from one post making fun of the Forsaken]

"that Ghost link" [I was warning someone with a newsletter that their links weren't working]

"rocks of injustice" [...]

"my slutty tanktop" [twice in a single "answered by my t-shirt" riff]

"might be Zeiat" [self-explanatory]

"meme prompts in" ["quotes", describing a thing I do to be considerate to some of my followers]

"LLMs that interpret" [ugh, not even gonna check]

"girl growth arcs" [in music-based subcultures originally, but this one could be positive, unless--]

"evil self-training" [--nope, never mind, I've been leaning too far in the... oh, wait, it was about ideologies I'm opposed to, that's fine then]

2026 gender census is out! They've been doing this for a while and are pretty reputable. This survey helps track trends in which terms people use to describe themselves by country and by other demographics, for instance. (I'm not affiliated with them.) Survey and more info: survey.gendercensus.com
Who can participate?

This survey intends to collect information from everyone who ISN'T adequately described by the "gender binary". According to the binary model of gender, everyone fits tidily into just one of these categories:

● Woman/girl - all the time, solely, and completely
↳ (may be cisgender, transgender, intersex, etc. for the purposes of this survey)
● Man/boy - all the time, solely, and completely
↳ (may be cisgender, transgender, intersex, etc. for the purposes of this survey)

Anyone who doesn't feel like they fit into one of these two boxes is invited to participate. There are no restrictions based on location, age, or anything else.

If you hesitate or struggle to place yourself into just one of those two boxes, or if you know for sure that these boxes were not made for you, please continue!

Just shuffled my Camp Miasma trading cards in with my EarthBound trading cards, in case I need an "oracle deck" or whatever. Also what if anything am I gutsy enough to put this sticker on. Certainly not my work laptop, and my personal laptop is full up.
A stack of EarthBound trading cards from a long-ago Fangamer kickstarter, with Giygas on top, next to a smaller set of Camp Miasma trading cards, with Little Death on top.

Above them is a sticker with the stylized Little Death / ceiling vent nested squares iconography, orange on black, with silver text reading "Little Death is coming"-- only it's all caps, so, you know, the ambiguity.

Mixing it up for once.
The main characters of Deltarune, plus Mr. Ant Tenna (the TV-headed man), sitting on a couch about to play "TV Time: The Legend of Tenna" on an old video game system.

The nested screen shows NES-esque graphics and an 8-bit avatar of Henna himself. The in-game border around the screen exactly matches the current border around the active screen of Deltarune itself during this part of the game, with the brown stars that suggest a wooden texture and even the doubling of the little TV antenna.

If you haven't played Deltarune, know that for this part of the game the active area of play is just tiny. Playing it on the Switch, in handheld mode, makes it feel downright GameBoy-esque.

Yesssss.
Connie doing a cool eyes closed, arm out gesture as she gets ready to read the beginning of the first Unfamiliar Familiar book to Steven, near the beginning of the Steven Universe episode "Marble Madness".

I like how this particular subplot has nothing to do with the events of the episode but instead references the show creators finally abandoning all pretense that the episodes of the series could be watched in any order, which is what Cartoon Network had originally asked of them. (Also, it's the same episode that gives Peridot her list of humans, which is such a gap between setup and payoff.)

This sounds way more like me in my late teens and early twenties than me now.
The results from this test, with "your closest counterpart" being "The Philosophe" (1700s · France · enlightenment publicist / Diderot & d’Alembert, the Encyclopédie), described as:

"You aim wit and reason in public at superstition and cruelty, and you do not mind the enemies. You think ridicule and argument can drag the human race out of the dark."

And with "representative figures" of Voltaire, Denis Diderot, and Montesquieu.

The full "how the field falls" list is:

1. The Philosophe enlightenment publicist
2. The Projector political arithmetician
3. The Virtuoso experimental philosopher
4. The Common Mercenary soldier of fortune
5. The Skeptic libertin érudit
6. The Military Entrepreneur war-contractor
7. The New Astronomer observer of the heavens
8. The Salonnière précieuse
9. The Mercantile Burgher regent
10. The Mathematical Mystic cosmos as divine geometry
11. The Leveller radical democrat
12. The Hermetic Magus natural magician
13. The Rationalist mechanical philosopher
14. The Quaker inner light
15. The Humanist Christian humanist
16. The Pansophic Reformer universal reform
17. The Cambridge Platonist rational religion

...and then there were more, but the screenshot cuts off. I also didn't expand the "read more" above, but, if you're curious, it said:

Primary: Voltaire, Philosophical Dictionary (1764)
Secondary: Jonathan Israel, Radical Enlightenment (2001)

This is a very easy exercise for me, and nor just because my gallery app doesn't make the scrolling particularly difficult. Meet Zoey. She lived out her old age with me, from 2012 to 2020, and she loved me and loved attention. She was more into being picked up than any other cat I've met.

I saw the North Sea today, for the first time. Also, um... that thing where mermaids who can't fulfill their contracts turn to sea foam, is that only in Denmark, or here too? Because there was a _lot_ of sea foam, and I'm told it wasn't even an unusual amount. What are the sea witches even selling.
A beach on North Sea, under a clear blue sky. The tide is out, and the sand is covered with tiny shells. The sea is relatively calm.An old, disused pier made of uneven stones extending from said beach into the sea, towards a safety marked. You can see just an egregious amount of sea foam on the side of the rocks. More than one mermaid's worth for sure. I don't think I really understood what sea foam was until today.

A flashback page from early in Trigun Maximum.

Young Vash says: Rem... you like this flower?

And Rem replies: Yes, a lot. Red flowers are generally associated with love and affection. This one isn't the biggest, but I really, really like flowers that bloom brightly in the wild. But, you know, geraniums have another meaning. In the language of flowers... "determination"...

The top two rows of the page have the dialog bubbles over normal conversation panels, with closeups of Vash and Rem's faces. But the bottom row is a single panel of present-day Vash's usual gun surrounded by smoke and sound-effects that are translated as "ker-pow".

We also stopped by Pilsen Community Books, which I hadn't been to since they moved to a building they own. Their SF/F section is a lot bigger now and feels like less of an afterthought! Anyway, I found some good news for WisCon-goers! And only one Mitchison, but it's the important one, as you know.
A possibly new or at least newer than I've seen before edition of Joan Slonczewski's A Door Into Ocean, a book that never failed to get at least one recommendation every year at WisCon.A copy of Naomi Mitchison's Travel Light, inconspicuously nestled in with some other books (including a bunch of China Mieville and books #2 and #3 of The Locked Tomb).
