I mean, I probably don’t NEED to bring ammonite cookies to FantasyCon, but darn it, I am doing the Snakestone Girl thing. There is a lot of Snakestone Shortbread chilling in my fridge right now, is what I’m saying. Now I can just manage not to burn them when I bake tomorrow…

#booksky #bookqw word: PUSH. From THE SNAKESTONE GIRLS. Letty ran away. The local cunning woman helped her, but now she had to get up to her bedroom window ... somehow. Fun fact: the hare artist, Thomas Bewisk, is who Jane Eyre is poring over as her story begins. Pre-orders: tinyurl.com/nddx4d5p
Text: Letty felt something push her from below. It couldn’t have been the hare. No hare was strong enough to lift a girl on its back. But something dusty sprang under her feet, and Letty found herself up in the air as if she’d leaped there. Only when she thought to grab the ivy branches now in reach did the sensation, like a dream when you wake and remember you can’t fly, suddenly vanish.

Ghuls are djinni or djinn-adjacent monsters of Arabia and the Muslim world, evil spirits that dwell in cemeteries and eat the flesh of the dead: they often disguise themselves as the living and engineer mass feats of death for feasts of their own. #FairytaleTuesday
"Amine discovers the Ghoul" from a version of the Thousand and One Nights, showing the servant Amine seeing a full-blown ghoul uncovering a dead body and revealing it to the woman courting his master, who is also herself a ghoul.

Though in each of these situations there is actually a way he has to be active: knightly courtesy. It takes verbal skill to stop Arthur going for the Knight without dishonouring someone. It takes tact to deflect your seductive hostess. It’s all about talk, but Gawain treats that as a real skill.

While at the same time Gawain was so alienating - in such a frustrating way to watch, because it’s all about selfishness and passivity, which are anti-story - that I didn’t feel intellectually simulated, just narratively disengaged.

‘Reload, you just got another bad ending.’ And the encounters had a vibe that I think aimed for ‘dream quest’ but landed on ‘level design.’

It felt like it was ‘debunking’ sentimental ideas of the chivalric age that I do not hold - and neither does almost anyone these days. Especially as it wasn’t interested in the reality either. Who is it actually challenging? I kept feeling, ‘I do not think what I think you think I think.’

Interesting! I am an artsy-film person and to me missed because it wasn’t artsy enough. It felt like it was shooting for artsy but was mostly influenced by pop culture - which can be a great mix, but it felt like it lacked the nuance of the one and the vigour of the other.

Yes, I wanted to like it more than I did. It looked great, but it was paced like a video game in a way that really distracted from the medieval mood.

Watching THE GREEN KNIGHT when we live around cheeky urban foxes. That fox of Gawain’s carries its head way too upright. That’s a dog posture. Foxes SLINK. Trot on scuttly legs at the same time, but slink.

#booksky #bookqw word: TREAT Janet, the fairy-smith's wife, is trying to talk her friend Franklin into forbidding his daughter's relationship with an unsuitable boy. She probably shouldn't be doing it in a fey-haunted forest. Buy Here: tinyurl.com/nvvetupj

It was a gentle motion, not swaying the world, and the birds
cooed and chirruped to each other above them. Franklin still
hadn’t found an answer when they heard the sound of hooves.

I knew the phrase 'queen of air and darkness', but didn't know Housman came up with it. Pretty metal poem.
Her Strong Enchantments Failing
AE Housman

Her strong enchantments failing,
Her towers of fear in wreck,
Her limbecks dried of poisons
And the knife at her neck,

The Queen of air and darkness
Begins to shrill and cry,
'O young man, O my slayer,
To-morrow you shall die.'

O Queen of air and darkness,
I think 'tis truth you say,
And I shall die tomorrow;
But you will die to-day.

#booksky #bookqw word: KNEW. Bear with me, trying a new format! (Grappling with Insta.) Caroline has been arrested for witchcraft and held prisoner. She's close to confessing - but she's always had an affinity for fossils, and someone has just slipped one into her hand.
Text against a seashore background: "Caroline was too mad with thirst to think of it very much for the moment, but she knew without looking, just by the feel of it, what it was. A circle twining in on itself. A stone shaping perfect mystery.

You whirl inward, Henry had said. She whirls outward.

A snakestone."

Robert Shaw: icy calm and blazing threat, possessed of a raw animal intelligence and equally animal morality: this is predation and he's good at it. Andy Serkis: a genuine force of amoral chaos, passionately assured this is serving the greater deity. 6/

COLLATERAL popped up on Netflix. It's hard to imagine a better-played hero Max than Jamie Foxx, but while Tom Cruise gives one of his best performances as the hitman Vincent - he's always good as a villain - it's such an archetypal role I'm now imagining other Vincents. Who can you picture? 1/

Did you know The Librarian has an arch nemesis (in reality actually an X-Men villain) named The Vanisher? I usually post this comic book panel when talking about him but it is part of a full page comic spread and could be mini Librarian story in of itself.
The Vanisher in an orange scaled jumpsuit and outlandish pink cowl holds a stack of books and proclaims "I am the Vanisher and I take what books I want". A jeans jacket dude looks on in askanceFull 5 panels showing the Vanisher interacting with an African American woman librarian who wants his library card. Another guy in a jeans jacket with patches and a slouchy hat is complaining the Vanisher is taking all the book. Vanisher says his catch phrase "I am the Vanisher and I take what books I want". She says - "Not without a library card!" and in the final panel he disappears with the books in a cloud of poof and she says "Oh, no! First the Bookworm, now this!"

It does make sense. Caroline only starts calling him Harry once he’s become … well, sort of her brother, though I believe ‘queerplatonic’ is a way to describe the relationship. You can count the people who ‘Harry’ him on one hand - they’re just all major characters!
