I still love patchwork, I still hate custard and I still make a mean toffee apple. History, sleep support and who knows what else besides, all in beautiful East Lothian.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5,000 years.

Musselburgh scrubbing up well in the September sunshine.
A view across a rough grass meadow, past trees, to a church spire set against distant purplish hills. A few figures walking in the meadow, high clouds in a bright blue sky.A shiny metal feather sculpture set on a rock. Scale is difficult to tell from the image, but it is around a foot or 30cm long. The feather curves to reflect a blue sky. Glimpse of scrubby grass and a tarmac path beyond.

If we are serious about stopping ‘rogue’ AI agents, we need to create one that seeks out and erases debt - student loans, medical debt, mortgages, car finance - all of it. AI would be on the shortest of leashes before you could say ’interest rate’.

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.
A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:
Forget ChatGPT Flyers
Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands

Don't be left behind
Broadsheets are the future

Once again, speaking as a professional archaeologist: "English" is not an ethnicity in any meaningful sense. You only have to go back about 1,000 years before everyone in Europe has the same group of common genealogical ancestors. Humans have lived on the British Isles for almost a million years.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

Down in Carberry Woods today....
A mushroom or toadstool. Leaf litter around gives a scale of around 5cm high. A nearly round white cap on a white stem. The toadstool and the top of the stem are covered in tiny spikes. Evenly spaced amongst the tiny ones is a regular pattern or taller spikes, tipped with pale brown.

There is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker. If any of us had to flee for our lives international law recognises that we may not be able to get visas overnight or at all, have money, have passports, fly out of a national airport...so we'd have to go however we could.

The RNLI saves lives at sea, regardless of who they are. Sometimes the crew doesn't come back. To me that sounds a lot more patriotic than getting ballied up and chanting inane slogans at people trying to go on holiday. rnli.org/about-us/our...

Why does the RNLI launch to small boats in the English Channel?
RNLI lifeboat crews have always launched to the rescue without judgement or preference. Men, women and children in danger in the Channel are no exception.

What was extraordinary about yesterday even was not the eclipse. It was the vibe. We visit Blackford Hill regularly and I have never seen so many as a TENTH of the people there yesterday, and I have never experienced a crowd quite like it. No-one....
The top left of a face. Cropped so just a bit of nose, cheek and ear visible. Wearing a floppy brimmed beige hat, solar glasses covering the left eye. Long grass and bushes in the background.
