The Connecticut Sun's final game is tonight. Connecticut and its fans bought into the WNBA at its low point, turning a profit when the NBA's owners saw the league as a moneypit, only to lose their team now that everyone sees big bucks in women's sports. Some thoughts on the setting of the Sun:
Surprisingly, moving the team to Connecticut worked. In 2010, the Sun became the first WNBA team to turn a profit — during a global recession, and during the league’s nadir of popularity. The casino in the middle of nowhere became a fortress. The Sun has won 64.5 percent of its home games. It developed a real fanbase and made four WNBA Finals.

The Connecticut Sun is not the first WNBA team to die. (Enjoy this haunting image of the mascots for the Sacramento Monarchs, Utah Starzz, Detroit Shock, and yes, the Houston Comets, hanging out, smiling, not realizing that death will soon come for them.)

But it’s the first WNBA team to die for this reason: Not because nobody cared, not because it couldn’t make money, not because it couldn’t find fans or win games, not because the league is shrinking … but actually because the league is growing. The Sun helped the WNBA survive, but the period of mere survival is over. The league is moving on to bigger markets and bigger money and leaving Connecticut behind.

People need to stop listening to Carney's words and look at his actions instead. That's your proof of who he is. The man can spin a good speech, he's a master of rhetoric, but words are cheap. Everything he's doing is straight out of the Conservative playbook despite the way he sugar-coats it.

Every time the Oilers do anything I am convinced that if someone were writing this plot for a fictional evil sports team, they'd have been told to rein in the cartoon villainry to keep it believable. And yet!

Danièle Sauvageau has been named general manager of Canada’s National Women’s Program through the 2030 Olympic Winter Games. She'll maintain her role as GM of the PWHL's Montreal Victoire this season, then transition to full time with HC afterwards.

Jared is lying to you, he would have three nickels! Which is even cooler, though the coolest part might be that these latest records are so much bigger than the 2016 CWHL crowd that they feel like an entirely different historical category.

Has blown my mind how many Americans who rightly saw FIFA as a corrupt organization and Trump as such and a bully, have now gone, that if it works in their favor then it’s actually a kind of good. FIFA isn’t even saying the red card was wrong, they simply moved the suspension to satisfy the US.

I think sometimes it can be easy to lose sight of the way that the players, themselves, made this professional league possible. This draft class features several players who are making clear it's not forgotten.

I interviewed Ashley Messier in 2019, when she spoke about the PWHPA's advocacy for a pro league that felt so distant, she mentioned it as a dream for her own future grandchildren. Tonight, she was drafted to the Vancouver Goldeneyes of the Professional Women's Hockey League.
"As important as hockey is to me, and it definitely is my driving force for a lot of the things I do, I know that it's not going to be 'til the day I die," she acknowledges. Messier's been keeping an eye on the women's hockey landscape and would love to see a strong professional league in place by the time she graduates university. "I would really hope that it is, obviously, a reality," she says first and foremost, noting the frustrating state of affairs that post-collegiate players currently confront.

"I really hope that they push through, as they have been," she continues. "And when I get there, if it's not quite where it needs to be, I hope that I can do the same to try and make it better for the younger generations with hockey, because I think it's really important that women have a chance to compete at a high level like the men do. I know it's not reasonable to think of it as the NHL in the next five years. But I hope at some point in my lifetime, or my grandchildren's lifetime, that that is a reality, that they can play and get paid to play and make their life out of it."
