I'm not a fan of podcasts - preferring to read a transcription at my own pace. Which may be a slow read or a quick skim. But I always listen to IfG's output, which is really good and stuffed with information that I don't know and really should. Recommended. Look at the cast!

Every day since 2016 the Daily Express has discovered, with accompanying outrage, that leaving the European Union meant leaving the European Union.

The financial costs should surely be fairly easy to deal with if it weren't for the politics and, perhaps, concern about moral hazard? But the opportunity costs of that misallocation cannot be undone.

Would probably need to provide insurance cover too - if things get really treacherous then commercial insurance of hull and cargo probably won't be available.

My only contribution to the UK food discourse is that if you want to understand Britain you should be aware that we invented a condiment featuring a delicate, tangy, sweetly sharp blend of tomatoes, molasses, dates, apples, tamarind, allspice, vinegar and raisins and gave it the name “brown sauce”

That is, of course, a voluntary scheme - I assume that applicants would receive some advice on the pros and cons given their specific circumstances.

The last sentence seems important. If we assume that the insurance industry has lots of capacity now (given the possibility of "quasi-defeasing" the liabilities), that possibility could dry up pretty quickly, and the exit window shut again.

"Dahling, these pigs in blankets are utterly divine. So amusing. Did you make them yourself?". "Well ye..well no actually. I bought them from Al.., oh no, that's also wrong, silly me, what was I thinking? I had them delivered from Marks and Sparks." "Quite right and proper. Such a clever girl."

Kim Driver @kimdriver.bsky.social · 26/11/2023
Only very posh people call sausages wrapped in bacon "pigs in blankets". Using the term indicates club membership. It's not a rational descriptor, which is the point. True "pigs in blankets" would surely be sausage rolls, and even that's a bit affected.

The author surely has a legal case if the literal meaning of the original text has been altered? Shouldn't be hard to establish whether or not that's the case.

(I block anyone who invokes entropy as the analogous process by which to explain something else. That's the worst. Really does my head in.)

Kim Driver @kimdriver.bsky.social · 24/11/2023
I confess that whenever something X is described or explained by drawing an analogy with Y, it just adds to my confusion. Surely it's simpler just to describe or explain X than to (i) describe and explain Y and then (ii) justify X's similarities with Y? That adds complexity. (But I'm not a poet.)

Sadly. And tax relief granted to corporates is only really effective when the headline rate is high. Japan.... Sunak isn't aiming at the electorate. He's trying to placate his right wing. Just like May's attempt at Brexit, the objective is to hold the Tory Party together. It's party management.

That leaves undone a lot of economically justified stuff that we need done, because it can only be indirectly and often only very slowly monetised. The value created is too broadly distributed, the payoff horizon too long, for a single company to be confident that it can capture it.

Kim Driver @kimdriver.bsky.social · 21/11/2023
Will this be accompanied by more state investment? Because the private sector only invests in stuff it can quickly and directly monetise (not its fault, the system is set up that way - to make the private sector fragile and so compel it to be responsive).
