I’m here to vouch for long term shelter cats. My cat has been with me for about a year, but before that he spent FIVE! in the shelter. Not his fault he didn’t “show well” in front of strangers. It took a few months to win him over but now we are besties forever.

My shelter tabby cat clinging to me with both paws. His claws are out and stabbing my boob. He looks happy. I’m petting his back.
