None of us can top E.B. White on this argument
“Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last--the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion.”

Ryan Reynolds is the worst leading man in the movies nowadays, and my dude @scotttobias.bsky.social nails what makes him so vexing (h/t @kimbermyers.bsky.social for bring this to my attention). thereveal.film/in-review-on...
Ryan Reynolds has been a glib, unfunny screen presence for nearly three decades, a durability that suggests that many people do not find him glib and unfunny, accepting him much as they might accept, say, the default motion smoothing setting on their TV sets. It might be tempting to say that he’s “evolved” since National Lampoon’s Van Wilder defied critical consensus and made him a star in 2002, but it’s the projects themselves that have legitimized him more than any significant tweaks on his part. There’s a fundamental disengagement to his approach to comedy that tends to suck the air out of his films, one defined by an arch, wink-wink/nudge-nudge running commentary that signals to the audience never to take what they’re seeing too seriously. All of what they’re experiencing is just grist for the mill.

that's right, Bruce Campbell www.mensjournal.com/entertainmen...
When asked how it’s been for him to see the series transform since its indie beginnings way back in 1981 with director Sam Raimi, Campbell revealed his one issue with the recent installments.

“I’d like more humor back in. The three features have been mostly humorless, and I personally have a problem with that,” he said, echoing a sentiment shared among some of the franchise’s fans. “There’s no point for these to get too grim. You can be scary without being grim.”

“A little more humor wouldn’t kill you,” he added. “And one hero that you really can root for. Ash is an idiot, but you want him to survive.”

“Modern filmmakers love to color their movies like a David Fincher movie, like a hospital room, you know?” Campbell continued. “Gray-green, like a garage. Garage lighting. And so, okay, it’s a choice. It’s not mine. I think even a horror movie can look pretty. Why not throw them off? Make it all look pretty and wonderful, and then let them have it.”
