The aim of this comms strategy is to create this narrative: 👐 Look at all the things we're doing about school attendance! 👐 Rather than: ⚠️ School attendance figures continue to be terrible, despite all the Action Plans and Ad Money we've thrown at the issue. ⚠️

Tusla has published multiple reports & studies about school attendance recently - including an ERSI publication on the 17th September - and they have always been featured in the news. Tusla has also spent >€1m on media adverts, so why was the release of the 2024/25 school attendance data so quiet?

One week later, with no fanfare - or statement from the minister - Tusla quietly published the 2024/25 school attendance report, the Thursday before Budget Day. It received practically zero news media coverage, even though it shows continued high levels of absence, mainly due to illness.

How to bury bad news, Tusla style: On 24/9/26 Tusla hosted a School Attendance Summit in Croke Park, with 300 attendees, including the Minister. It published a couple of reports at this summit, none of which were the 2024/25 School Attendance Report, which should have been published months ago.

A newly published wastewater report shows the extent of the Covid wave currently hitting Ireland. Ringsend in Dublin has seen a near-vertical rise in Covid levels, with its peak likely to exceed last year's wave.

Only at surface level. Who gets to decide who gets to pay what rent? What is expected in return? How are favours traded within the organisation? Does that culture expand beyond the management of properties? Is it the same culture when it comes to handing out multimillion euro public contracts?

Tusla has published its school attendance report for the 2024/25 school year, and attendance still hasn't recovered compared to pre-pandemic levels. Illness is by far the biggest cause of absence, accounting for 52% of explained absences in primary schools, and 57% in post-primary.

The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

We're in a proper Covid wave here in Ireland at the moment with a significant number of hospitalisations each week. Flu cases are ramping up too. For all the recent news coverage of the flu vaccine shortages, there has been very little public acknowledgement of this Covid wave.

There is a sense that the HSE is manufacturing the conditions in which it can drop the Covid vaccine altogether. It's actually outrageous that children are not being ordinarily offered thr vaccine at all. Probably a lot of kids (0-4yo) who haven't had it at all, and others not since 2022.

Numbers without context are numberwang. I have no idea if this is a lot or a little. Maybe it's half of the vaccine stock. Maybe it's a half of one percent. The article doesn't say The only number I have to measure it against is an overall HSE deficit of €1bn, against which it's a drop in the ocean

In Ireland, "Respiratory Virus Season" is officially considered to run from Oct to May, with reporting & vaccination programmes geared around that. But...the Covid wave that's currently overwhelming hospitals took root in *JULY* and exploded when schools returned. "Season" is an outdated concept.
