🧵What Counts as "Reasonable Force" in England's Schools? This English school’s behaviour policy admits there’s no legal definition of “reasonable force” as we have cited over and over. Yet staff are expected to know when and how to use it in what would constitute a “serious incident.”
A screenshot of a English school policy document titled "THE USE OF REASONABLE FORCE DURING A SERIOUS INCIDENT." The policy states that there is no legal definition of reasonable force, making it difficult to specify when and how much force may be used. It emphasizes that use of force should be a last resort, using only the minimum necessary. The stated priority is the safety of pupils and staff, and all incidents must be logged in the SIMS system. The page number "11" appears at the bottom.

Hope for practice that improves outcomes for all is stronger when programmes like NATP upskill staff to understand autism, ethnicity and culture. It is particularly important to understand the impact of standardised language in autism. #NATPmentalhealth
repeated full days of training on autism, ethnicity and culture
● include speakers from different ethnic backgrounds
● attention to the narratives of ppl from global majority in relation to ND
● open to dialogue and challenge status quo was evident in every session
● safe and reflective spaces for all to learn
● intersectionality is not just one module- its threads run consistently
throughout all modules of the curriculum with vignettes, examples etc
● the National Autism Trainer Programme team has repeatedly supported
clinicians on how this can be done in your service by suggesting:
■ special interest groups in intersectionality and autism
■ audits for anti-oppressive practice
■ attention to narratives and mindsets of change more broadly

Autistic Masking is discussed in all our Discovery Programme workshops for Autistic adults. Summary below created by our programme lead @gemkennedy.bsky.social Great read: Autistic Masking: Understanding Identity Management & the Role of Stigma by A Pearson & @kieranrose.bsky.social (link below)
Text based poster reads: Finding Out About:
Masking
In Our Autistic Adult Discovery Programme

Masking - Key Reminders:

"A psychological safety mechanism made up of complex layers of
physical, emotional and social actions which an Autistic person is driven
to use to self-protect and project an acceptable version of who they are."
- Kieran Rose

Everyone masks, especially those from marginalised identities

For an Autistic person it can be draining, traumatic and lead to
Autistic burnout

Possible effects of masking - burnout, self-medication, dissociation,
fawning, people pleasing

Unmasking - not necessarily the ultimate goal!
