If you didn’t know, preorders are incredibly important for new books! By preordering a copy, you’re helping my book succeed and get noticed by even more readers. So place your order today to help me out! Info from here: www.npr.org/sections/pla...
Preorders are incredibly helpful for authors. If you are buying books to support them, preorders give them an extra boost that can become a snowball. Booksellers look at preorder numbers when they are deciding on things like which titles get the sweet, sweet spot in the window, which are at the top of their website or even just how many copies to stock. They want to pick winners their customers will like, and strong preorders are a predictor of that.

The preorders also all count as first-day sales, so big preorders increase the chance of starting out on a bestseller list, which then leads to more sales and … you can see the snowball.

the tech industry and their media stooges have done an expert job misleading the public and distracting them from the real threats posed by generative AI. it’s not going to destroy humanity, but it’s sure causing a lot of social and environmental harm right now.

A 22-year-old student first caught COVID in 2022, then developed Long COVID after reinfection the following year, forcing her to drop out of university. Calling for greater support, she said: “As a young person, it can be quite hard to be taken seriously by medical professionals” #LongCOVID

Google has outlined how it’s handling Donald Trump’s latest tantrum. In the US, it will display “Lake America.” In Canada, it will show “Lake Ontario.” In the rest of the world, it will make it seem like a debate: “Lake Ontario (Lake America).” More reason to replace Google Maps.
Google will show Lake America in the US, Lake Ontario in Canada, and Lake Ontario with Lake America in brackets in the rest of the world.

Google has now renamed Lake Ontario for US users. They don’t even show the real name in brackets. I used a VPN to compare: Apple hasn’t renamed it (at least not yet), nor has Dutch service Here WeGo or OpenStreetMap. Yet another reason to ditch Google, and US tech more broadly.

I haven't looked it up and just general curiosity but I remembred years ago, men just pass more from covid, this is 2022 www.nytimes.com/2022/01/19/h... So, idk if there has been an update, women get LC more, men go sooner? idk, cause this seems really unfair and/or false sense of security

doesn't even conform to the usual way we talk about diseases, it killed and continues to kill millions, they said 'live with it' then 'it's like the flu' and then somehow it is over with 'post/during covid' qualifiers when ebola, flu etc never ended all while costing and affecting millions

In the 2010s, we were told new tech would revolutionize transportation. As BMW faces backlash for sticking a Spider-Man ad on its center console, we can see what it really amounted to: cars that collect vast quantities of data on us and which automakers are desperate to use to push ads on us too.

We were promised a transport revolution. Instead we got cars tracking us and serving us ads.

There are still tons of people who ask why victims stay in abusive relationships and use that line of thinking to attack and undermine the credibility of victims. The actual mechanism of coercive control is still so misunderstood by the public—a victim staying actually makes perfect sense.

“You comfy back dere Bell? Rogers? Telus? We about to go higher than I’ve ever been. Man you guys crazy.”
Our favourite, well actually our only, telecom companies, Bell, Rogers and TELUS make up the oligopoly that is our major market of communication and entertainment. We have tolerated their high prices for so long that it has become natural to us. The prices keep increasing every year, and yet it seems not much can be done. Why are we paying among the highest prices for the lowest quality service?Well, let’s buckle up and try to explain why this is.
