An episode of Tom & Jerry where Tom chases Jerry on the hedonic treadmill. Tom can't keep up, but instead of crushing his toes Tom flattens into a pancake that circles the belt of the treadmill endlessly

what do normal people do at 2 in the morning? because me? im pacing the entirety of my home. why? I have no idea other than the fact that if I sit down I cant sit still for long. I know I know i should be sleeping but I had a nap (an hour tops) earlier in the day so now im fully awake.🚶🏻‍♀️

My sister died in a Context Collapse disaster, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't make insensitive comments that will reach a broad audience of people that will tell me my sister should have worn proper PPE when joining tumblr

I'm about to replace a router that I've stubbornly held on to for a decade. After so long, I don't know if I owe it a viking funeral or if I should put it down like Old Yeller

I don't really like collecting stuff, but having a display case or shrine to show off something you care about must feel awesome. I want to dedicate an elaborate shrine with framed photos of Robin Williams and Anthony Bourdain and refuse to entertain questions to guests that ask about it

I must not be good at finance. I almost never hear people mention inflation in the same conversation that they use raising stock prices as their sole indicator that the economy is healthy

A qualified optometrist will reliably tell you if you are either near-sighted or far-sighted. Paranormal optometrists should not be trusted; they always say your hindsight is 20-20 but somehow struggle to give a prescription for your foresight reading glasses

Happiness feels possible as long as it's underneath the ceiling you set for humility and above the floor of your sense of self-worth. seeing people with high ceilings may raise your floor, and seeing people with low floors may drop your ceiling. I assume you just clip out of bounds when they collide

Getting a theoretical physicist and a sociologist into the same room and trying to convince both of them that context collapse exists within a false vacuum, and we're in theoretical danger of knowing even LESS about each other

A sweaty and increasingly desperate keynote speaker during a pitch to AMC: "Everyone only has the attention span for short-form content, but want the shared social experience of a shared theater experience. What if we sold tickets for 2 hours of shared algorithm scrolling..."

I loathe being a reductivist, but it's hard to build a community around it. It would take forever to get to know anyone, and if you try to save time with brevity, you become the pariah

The most enduring motivating force in my life has been an impending deadline. Life's only joy now is trying to be better about blindly gauging how much effort something will be so that I can learn the first thing about it at the last possible moment and panic to compensate for the unexpected

I'm going to spend weeks thinking about that guy who fought tirelessly against a five cent price hike on hot dogs in 1978. We should all aspire to have the turpitude and conviction to not only identify injustice before anyone else can, but stand by it and fight for it.

Everyone online has their own Perpetual Stew that starts the first time they engaged with the internet. Over a long enough time, you'll see a complex tapestry of the whole history of that stew, but if you tell someone else about it, they'll just taste the carrots from last week

Free business idea: take any clinical description of a mental health disorder from the DSM-5 and feed it to an LLM with the instruction to turn it into a 120 page self-help guide to mastering essential leadership qualities. No need to proof-read it, even. Nobody that buys it will actually read it

My new years resolution is to dive headlong into having on online presence and enjoy it like everyone else seems to. Playing online games, joining discord channels, engaging in lively and reasonable discussions with like-minded folks and forgetting entirely about privacy and palantir and shit

I think it's fine to set lofty dreams when you're young and readjust them to be more realistic when you get older. My dreams have never been that lofty, I just happen to be unfit for my own dreams and more capable helping other people's dreams and dying inside

I feel like I've seen enough people doing their job poorly, including leadership, that I find myself questioning if anyone actually knows what they're doing, or if we're all just faking it, and at best propping up the last generation of people pretending they knew what they were doing

I could really use a pep-talk, but not a generic one, or one that I wrote to motivate me in the specific way I want. If somebody knows a private investigator that will stalk me and then give me personalized motivation, I'll compensate. If not, I could use investors for a new business idea

Imagine someone developing a kink where they want real life people to talk to them like they're an AI chat bot, but living in a hell where the person isn't convincing enough to play the role, or so convincing that they might not be real. Such things are possible in an area we call the Twilight Zone

Care about online privacy long enough, it'll ruin your ability to enjoy the internet. Yet when I see people posting stupid shit with accounts linked to their full name traceable to all their activity online, I feel a little envious. Are they seeing the internet through a more innocent, joyful lens?

I want to be invited to an online community, but only so I can be distant and guarded until someone offhandedly mentions something that I'm passionate about and invites me to a smaller, chiller community that I can feel slightly more guilty for neglecting

If speculation markets are going to be the next big thing by "financializing" disagreements, it might be possible that people with student debt can actually break even on the question "was a college education a good long-term financial investment"

I miss being a DM. I put a lot of effort into building a world over three whole years for a bunch of friends who probably spent more time being drunk and adulterous. Those drunk narcissistic idiots ruined everything, and my writing just goes into the trash

I've had enough. Putting "refrigerate after opening" on the packaging of food sold at room temperature is basically assault and battery. I'm not eating dehydrated meat from a bag because I have the patience to snack like a lawyer and read the fine print on the bottom of the bag.

Even if you don't live in NYC, you can root and celebrate Zohran's success more broadly since it means that people have opened up to left-leaning, progressive and pro social policies. If DNC leadership continues to fight against it only underscores a role as impotent controlled opposition.

While we're all being reductive, there are only 4 types of ways to engage online: 1) being smug and/or seeking approval 2) being pitiful and/or wanting attention 3) being hostile and/or deriving joy from suffering 4) crackpot

Exciting new ways to justify not going to therapy: 1) The provider or your insurance have a profit motive to give you poor, ongoing care instead of helping 2) You have SO MUCH baggage to unload, and you're too much of an empath to burden a hard working therapist with your problems
